I used to fly birds, when I worked at NewentΒ www.icbp.org/index/ back in the '80s

Must have wonderful memories of thse days, such majestic birds. I've seen harris hawks, eagle owls, kestrel and american kestrel at that place. These are the birds they mostly seem to fly, do have others there also though. No sparrowhawks tho sadly, the woman there say they are very difficult as such crazy characters. A big part of me does find it sad to see birds of prey in captivity though. There are 2 golden eagles at our local wildlife park, they are mean to be injured though and wouldn't survive in the wild.

'Mima' used to fly Mozart, the Eagle Owl, among others, and I had to jess & hood him and take him down to the flying area.
That was some weight on your wrist, and some way to walk.
I haven't really followed her since she upped sticks and moved to the US. Things didn't work out there, so she came back.
From what I hear, the number of birds has dropped. and the breeding success has fallen.
In her younger days, she was a naughty girl when it came to Birds of Prey. She turned Queen's Evidence,
and the DoE's Wildlife Investigation Section was able to bust a major international smuggling ring.Β

The eagle owl will sit on the table right next to you at place I go, magnificient birds. Someone made the mistake of touching it once though, painful lesson that was That is interesting to hear, Mima sounds like a bit of a character! You mean there are less birds of prey in captivity in the UK these days? I guess breeding them must be challenging. I've heard ospreys really don't take well to captivity.

I don't know about the UK breeding, but the ICBP at Newent has had problems over the past few years.
Ospreys are best in the wild, and the Swan Herd at Abbotsbury Swannery phoned me this morning, telling me there are two flying around The Fleet.

I've heard of a lot of osprey sightings, sure there are quite a few nests in England and Wales now also. They seem to be thriving now I go to a place called Kinnordy that has a few regulars showing up atm. You can say you were there at the start of their recovery!

There was news on Monday, that one had been seen over the Levels, don't know any more as to where it was.
Not being a driver I don't get about much, I rely on my lady friend, Beith, she's well into wildlife
It wasn't 'till I read the bottom line that I saw I was there at the beginning. It was just a job at the time.

I thought you worked with the ospreys at Loch Garten? I am sure they are spreading out across UK, had many succesful breeding years here now. I think they have a fairly high mortality rate in first couple of years though.Their migration must be full of various perils.

Well you should as the people who helped give this amazing bird another chance did a great job!Β  Not sure how recent this is but I heard they chopped down a large area of forest at one of the nesting sites due to the trees getting taller than osprey nest one. After the disaster of the Victorian era it is inspring to see people work so hard for this iconic bird. I certainly thoroughly enjoy the fruits of their/your labour.

Not bad for Β£150. The garment is individually made, with pockets in the side seams, so no two are alike, each is unique.
Thanks a like for the favour Squire Our garments have been worn on every continent including Antarctica, which had Dougie Allan wearing his Emperor Penguin & Chick shirt at the South Pole.
Dougie is a Cold Water specialist, and was the chief cameraman on Frozen Planet. He used to work for BAS.
