Description There was a boy
A very strange
Enchanted boy
They say he wandered
Very far, very far
Over land and sea
A little shy and
sad of eye
But very wise was he
(D.Bowie, from Moulin Rouge Soundtrack)

The boy with the striper pijama is my son

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

Vision: Nice name, and I like the poem that goes along with the deviation. It really adds vision, explains the thought process behind the picture. It really places the mind on the track of "curious adventurous boy" which really does well for this shot. The shot itself also asserts adventure by the look in his eye as he looks towards something that only the viewer can imagine. Good vision!

Originality: Kid shots, like most shots actually are a dime a dozen. So for originality you have to add some extra flare. This one does separate itself from some of the others. His position and look on his face, coupled with the light and his looking towards the source adds some originality.

Technique: I really think the technique is very good here. The depth of field is noticeable which is a big plus and its obvious your focus point was the eyes which is essential. I usually like to see the frame full of the entire body at a range like this but you have done well in your perspective. The coloring is nice as his blues seem to work well with the soft white behind him. The photo does have a simple and plain look and I suppose that could be a problem for views. However, this picture isn't going to be a mind blower but more of a personal family picture. This would go great framed in the living room or something. My critiques would be to up the contrast just a bit, and the white balance looks to be off quite a bit. You might intend for the picture to present itself with the yellow incandescent feel but if you want more vivid colors and a better exposure then you should use curves to fix the balance. (If you use photoshop). Also, a thin border could add some dimension and make the photo pop a bit more.

Impact: Like I said before, this isn't a mind blower and I don't think it could be or would really want to be that. I think you did a great job here but the impact is minimal. Really it's just the nature of the style of photography, at least in my opinion. I do get a feeling of adventure that seems to bring out the boy in me as I think through this so I must concede that. I think the impact is fair.

Great job on this photo.

First of all thanks a lot for the detailed critique, I really appreciate it.
I agree with you with the difficult to be original when portraing children, it seems that all is said and done and they quite never stay still long enough to be pictured!
As for the white balance turning yellow is intentional, I thought it could convey the "ancient" feeling better. And yes, I've adjusted curves in post production with photoshop. And also I used to add borders to my photos (the majority of them has one) but recently I tought the feeling could be more direct without them, so I'm experimenting.

Thanks a lot. I think this deep critique feature is great! I must find the courage to do a critique to others work too. But I think I've lots of things to learn before becaming a critic.

Well, I would disagree and tell you that becoming a good critic entails you having to be the critic first. I would appreciate it if you took one of my gallery on and critiqued it when you find the time. Pick the one you dislike the most and start with that. I take criticism very well and use it to accomplish more in my work. You don't have to be an expert in photography to critique fairly.
