Description Just a little tinkering around on a resin casting of the Tyrannosaurus skull. Just for fun, but will be doing different heads so there may end up being one that looks similar. I also tried the Witmer nostril and it looks kind of cool.

how much would it cost to purchase a resin cast of this beast skull it could come useful for when i decide to make a 1:15 scale tyrannosaurus

Hmmmm... Now that is a loaded question. I haven't considered making my work usable sort of like Scott Hartman's skeletals. I consider my work more as finished artwork or a model kit not a reference. It is flattering to think someone finds the skull to be good enough to work as a reference. I would think if you were planning to sell your own sculpture or model I would suggest creating it from scratch. Ethically speaking that is what I would do. I guess that is kind of a vague answer, but I have to cover my butt. Also, first I need to finish things before I could seriously consider it.

I was hoping to see your Tyrannotitan finished up. I would consider repairing the busted parts with epoxy sculpt and keep going.

was just curious. i understand if your not considering selling it.

sad to say, my tyrannotitan is long gone. trust me, i tried to save it. but the damage to the sculpture was just too severe from the fall, nor was i aware of using epoxy to repair parts at the time. it was a project over a yer old, and was my first time working at such a large scale

would you mind providing a brief explanation on your process of creating skulls like what you have here? been struggling with getting the hang of making reliable armatures for tyrannosaur skulls as of late

Sorry to hear about the Tyrannotitan. It was looking pretty good. It had the makings of a good piece.

I can certainly give you an idea of how I approach the making of the heads.

First, I draw the skull at whatever scale I am working in, both in side view "lateral" and top view "dorsal" Everyone has their own methods, but I don't as a rule print out Scott Hartman or Greg Paul skeletals. I really only use them to check my proportions. I feel like I'm cheating if I use their skeletals, but that is just me.

Now that I have them drawn to scale I cut a block of material " usually balsa foam" to just a bit longer and wider than the drawings. I then glue the top view to the top of the block and the side to the side with a little spray adhesive.

Now I cut out the first view usually the side on a band saw.

I then masking tape the off-cuts tightly back onto the block and make sure that I can clearly see the drawings even with the tape on it. I redraw the covered bits onto the tape.

Then I cut out the next view and discard the off cuts. "I hoard any still use-able bits just in case I need them"

You end up with a pretty good albeit blocky version of the skull. It is blocky because there is one side missing in a 3d object.

Finally, I carve the remaining foam down into pretty much the final thing.

After that I cover the whole thing in Sculpey and bake it like usual. the balsa foam is safe at the instructed temperature  275 or whatever it is. The foam doesn't seem to expand that I can see, and haven't had any trouble. I used it on Anzu, Giganotosaurus, and the T. Rex.  I think there might be some pictures of the Anzu skull on my DA page at a few stages of construction, In fact I think there might be a few of my others as well. Maybe on my next one I can take pictures of the whole process and make a tutorial. I am camera shy so it would be pictures not video.

Here's a quick little sketch I made the crudely shows how it works. I hope it helps!
