I don't believe DARPA does small arms aside from projects they subcontract out to defense firms. Believe me, I'm an industry engineer.

I see some influences from the 9-Weapon in there; especially the Poseidon kit. Am I correct?

Thank you! I'm a fan of Masamune Shirow in general and the 9-Weapon from the first film in particular. I even tried to recreate it in Solidworks a few years ago. Did not succeed.

Masamune Shirow is a titan of the genre. I'm definitely a fan.Β
SolidWorks is a fantastic program, but it can be hard to guess dimensions for fictional designs. I've had a lot of success modeling concept weapons in both SW and Pro/E though.Β

Given that the bore of the barrel of the 9-Weapon was known (5.7 mm), I worked backward from that, scaling the drawings to match. Probably off by a few percent, but close enough for my purposes. A buddy and I were trying to teach ourselves Solidworks, using Lynda.com videos. It was certainly not ideal, but I was able to fabricate a few things via 3D printing. One of Iria's revolvers from Zeiram (2), for example. Lots of guesswork, and some mistakes, but it's ... mostly there. Β LMK if you'd like any of my reference material, or Solidworks files to look at.

Looks awesome! I really like the fact it's so similiar to the Ghost in the shell gun, I've always liked that one. :3
Some interesting ideas; The P90 is 20 inches long with a 10 inch barrel, or 508mm with a 254mm barrel. There are guns out there that have 8 inch receivers, and thus, for the same overall length could have a slightly longer barrel length, at 12 inches . For your weapon, at 25.5 inches, you could easily have a 15.5 inch barrel, instead of a 13 inch barrel, and, with an extra two inches, added, you could have a 17.5 inch barrel. IMO, 23.5 inches is about the perfect size for a carbine, if you look at say the micro tavor and a few other weapons of their size, but 26 inches is pretty darn short. Thus, your weapon could have a much longer barrel, and thus increase accuracy, firepower, range etc. and even afford to use bigger cartridges. For a shorter barrel, the 6.8mm SPC comes to mind, and it's even more powerful than the 5.56mm. Although, with the suppressor, it's going to add a few inches, unless it saves space by wrapping much of it over the barrel.
As for the magazine, it doesn't need to be curved. When you think about it, that part of the weapon is all empty space. SO! You could just have a flat magazine, which would be easier to load, but instead is loaded in at an angle. It not only would be simpler and potentially more reliable, but also would be easier to fit on a vest, since straight up and down makes it easier to carry on your person, for back up magazines, in magazine pouches. If you end up with empty space, it could just be used as a container, for say cleaning supplies, or it could be hollow.
Just some thoughts. I really like the look of it, and the basic design.

I like the idea with the stackable horizontal clips. Or at least it LOOKS like it ought to be stackable for portability in an ammo pouch.
Ive thought about this very thing with the usual P-90 style mags. How it could be possible to turn it into a Quad Stack or reduce it down to a Single Stack for the last few rounds . . . so that you can make an indentation on the end of the magazine under the ammo feeder so that the ammo feeder of another magazine can snugly fit under it.
As for it being 6.2x25mm, and because of the unobtrusive position of the magazine . . . you should consider making the bullet cases Fatter. That means even though its only 25mm long for the cases they hold alot more powder and punch like a full size 5.56mm (because the length of a 5.56mm casing has been compensated by width).
Then just make the magazine fatter to accommodate them.
I did this idea with a Pistol I designed . . . since a Sidearm is a solder's option of last resort it damb well better be able to do its job, and it doesnt need many shots either. You use your pistol to get your rifle back. So I just made it a slightly shortened .50 AE, tapered down to 9mm. So yeah its a 9x28mm pistol but that case is a fat 13mm wide and punches like a .44mag. And the 9mm slugs it uses are heavy bstards from the VSS. So it penetrates like a jock on a prom date.

At first: The weapon looks very cool and ergonomic. A safty on both sides of the weapon is also very usefull. I would do the same for the charging handle. Must be possible with this design and its much easier to fix jam when you switched the aiming position.Β
I see also fewΒ disadvantages. One is the magazin. It looks cool and streamlined if you said, but I can imagine that it isnt possible to reload fast and the extraordinary bended form, dont fits in regular magazin pouches. The other problem is the iron sight. The mounted rail is to high or the iron sight to low, so I have no backup, if my main sights a broken.
Anyway, its a cool looking weapon. Maybe you can fix the problems.

The magazine would be too awkward to use in practical conditions. In order to load you'd have to move the weapon away from the body, then either look down to line it up properly in order to seat it and rotate into position or fumble around with it.

Archangel-Industries [2014-02-05 12:53:33 +0000 UTC]
The only real problem that I can see is that, due to the shape of the magazine, it'd be a pain in the arse to carry more than the one magazine in the PDW without a separate bag or so.

Nyandgate In reply to Archangel-Industries [2014-02-06 23:34:49 +0000 UTC]
This is true. I figured users might be able to carry extra mags in MP5-banana-style curved pouches.Β
But yeah. The convoluted reload process is probably the least realistic part of the design.

Very nice looking and the only thing I can see about the mag not working is ...
Is there some sort of spring in the mag that shots the round up into the barrel?
Very nice work work there.

EverlastingAbyss In reply to ajb-2k3 [2013-09-17 17:12:27 +0000 UTC]
It's a curved and none clear version of a P90 magazine and since the rounds sit horizontally relative to the firearm it'd actually still work despite the curve. It has a spring like other mag's just can't see it since it's not clear.

Interesting weapon design! It really does remind me of Shirow Masamune's work with the slight futuristic design while still being grounded in reality. I can imagine how I might operate this firearm should it actually exist and that's somewhat rare for concept weapons. The grip doesn't actually appear that ergonomic... but my experience in holding firearms is rather limited so this is a matter of opinion at the moment. Ambidextrous controls, bullpup design, large enough spacing and controls to accommodate gloves... all aspects that make me like this gun. Unfortunately, there are some points I'm not too fond of... its a rather high carry handle for the sights. I would imagine the weapon would only benefit with the sights being closer to the actual barrel. The weapon also appears to be rather long for a compact weapon. It kind of gives off the assault rifle feel, quite intimidating and powerful. Finally, it looks like you can probably shift the magazine further forward. I don't imagine there would be much underneath the grip so it would only serve as a hinge for the unique mag. That would probably shorten the weapon too. Regardless of what I say, this is infinitely better than what I can do and I admire godly designed weapons like this. Good Job!!

The only thing I see on this thing that isn't realistic is the way the mag is curved. This would easily function with a reverse pitson drive. For the "screw realism" aspect you've done an amazing job designing an Asthetic gun that could very well work, and work effectivally in real life.
If you got the money, try producing something like this, I'd love to see you craft the real deal.
Once again, great work.

I recently got into deviantart so I can post things of this nature ,but I can never post anything that can surpass this in any way. I know a thing or two about fire arms and I know this will be extremely effective in a real life situation. Its streamline, compact, looks versatile, esthetically pleasing, and looks like this design can be built and used in real life. VERY GOOD!!!!
