Description This is the sketch commission for of her OC "Kohaku." This wasn't supposed to be colored... but I couldn't manage to make it look good uncolored, so it ended up being colored. orz (naturally, I won't charge extra) but yay~ it's finally done. The color itself it sketchy, so I'mma just count it as a sketch. o uo Gosh I had so much fun drawing those knees.

Lately more of my influence is coming from :iconkyoukaara: @ u@ Basically her stuff reassures me that dynamic linework is totally legit. > A> That's a lot of relief for me since I can't color inside the lines to save my life on a good day.

This is awesome!

Again, I love that way you color. You use muted, but bright tones in this dreamy, watercolor-y way to add a really fun sense of energy to the pic, and to imply a lot of lifelike texture that adds depth and volume and brings the painting to lie. I especially like how you colored the wings, with the looser, kinda splotchy contrasts of shadows and highlights -- it give them a great, fluffy, feather-y texture. Her hair is lovely, too -- I love the subtle shine it has thanks to the bright highlights. Actually, yeah -- I like how when you do highlights, the color softly gets a bit washed out as it transitions to the bright highlights -- it makes it feel much more lifelike, much brighter, but still in that lovely soft, dreamlike way.

But when I am most captured by in this painting is the pose and the energy behind it. I noticed again that you used some foreshortening in her bent leg. It doesn't look bad, though it feels like it's not quite perfect either. The transition from the upper leg jutting out and the lower leg going back at the knee feels a bit awkward, and something seems a little bit off about proportions. So technically, it seems a little off. BUT! I think it, and the rest of the pose succeeds beyond that in how well it communicates the energy and motion of her pose! Everything is really dynamic and feels so believable -- it feels like she's running and leaning forward towards the viewer.

...hrmm. I am not doing it justice in explaining how much I love how that works. But please trust me when I say it looks great! Her upper body bends and leans forward, with also makes the running/flying pose feel stronger, because it shows how her momentum and the force behind her action pose is being carried through in a lifelike way. And the legs communicate and imply the motion and movement of running -- even if the one leg might have a small flaw or two, it succeeds beautifully in communicating the energy and the movement of her walk/run; there's a great sense of balance and flow and realism in the overall action and pose. And her arms, too -- they counterbalance the movement of the legs (when one leg is moving forward, the corresponding arm is moving back), but more than that, they have a great sense of motion of the arms actually moving, actually being "pumped" back in forth (in a very smooth, graceful way) in reaction to her running/flying pose.

And again, I love the face. Her eyes have a ton of life in them, too, this great, warm personality. And I like her smile -- you make such bright, lovely expressions out of subtle smiles. I love how the coloring gives her outfit an interesting texture as the light reflects off of the boots, her leggings, and the inside of the coat. And yeah -- that cloudy background gives it a great atmosphere here, too.

Love it! I really love that lifelike, exciting sense of energy and movement and action! You did an AMAZING job working the pose to communicate that feel in such a lifelike way. Awesome painting.

Thanks for the long, thought-out comment. XD;;;; This is a sketch commission and I really wasn't planning on coloring it at the beginning, but I did because I couldn't make it look good with only pencil-style shading. It's more like... I don't exactly put a lot of thought into my pictures so I feel like you're describing it as if I had everything planned that way. Eheheh... most of my pictures come out as accidents. o wo;;;;; As for proportions, I'm still working on that and I probably will be for the rest of my life. XD;;;;

I don't think there's anything wrong with not having it all planned out. A lot of the drawings I was most happy with were ones I started doodling at random in class and just making decisions on the fly and coming out with something nice in the end. (Well, nice at the time, anyway. ) But I understand what you mean!

That said, I still love how it came out.

And...please don't focus too much on my critique of the proportions! Really, I think there is far, FAR more going on here that works really well.

Anyhoo, you're very welcome. : )

I do worry, because if I don't, I won't get better now, will I? XD You hardly critiqued it. I should be able to withstand a little push like that. Besides, most people who draw figures will be working on proportions for life. It's unavoidable. o wo

Fair enough. I always think I'm critiquing, but I really feel like a critique should talk about what's good and why as much as pointing out things that could be improved. But I sometimes I get a little too scared of coming off like a jerk if I critique too harshly, I guess.

And you're right about proportions! I struggle with them a lot -- though I say that, but a lot of the time I "struggle" by giving up when a challenging pose isn't working and falling back something easier to pull off. -__-;;

Your proportions are great though. o uo Proportions don't need to be realistic. They just need to be balanced and solid enough to made sense for physics. For me, when foreshortening, I make things too big or too small, and then it confuses the shit out of me Q uQ. In real life, I often hurt myself because I can't judge distance with my eyes for some reason. Maybe it's just a part of my brain that refuse to tick. D: Like how some people are tone-deaf. So I guesstimate really hard for my more dynamic stuff.

Well, I don't try stuff like foreshortening very often because I have a hard time with it and just go back and stay in my comfort zone. And while I think there's issues with the leg in this pic, in the other one I commented on, I was really, completely impressed with the foreshortened arm. I see a lot of people fake foreshortening by just making the hand huge and hiding the arm behind it (I'm sure I've done it that way more than once in the past) but you made the hand seem to flow from the arm in a convincing way, making the hand just large enough that it feels closer, but still feels naturally connected.

And here, I don't think the issue is as much the perspective/distance of the leg. I do feel like it feels the upper leg and the knee are raised forward. I think the leg ends up feeling shorter because the upper leg is foreshortened but the lower leg kinda juts off more to the side than bends behind the upper part, which breaks some of that "coming at you " feel that was succeeding on the upper part of the leg. And with that feel or "illusion" broken, and with the other leg right there for comparison, the proportions of that leg start to feel off.

And...I'm really sorry to hear that you struggle with depth perception, particularly if you're getting injured as a result of it! >_<

Yep! I make the hand really big and hide the arm behind it. -is totally one of those people-

I see what you mean about the leg though. The jutting out to the side is partially because of the connotations pigeon-toed has for "girlhood" in anime/manga culture. what I should have done though is put brighter lighting on top of the thigh. Eheheheheh.... well, thanks for discussing this with me. It's so nice to see someone else's perspective on things. We're often blind to our weakest points, after all. o uo

The colours are so lovely and airy! I love the way the shape of the wings echoes the skirt.
