Dazzalea is based on gray foxes and Water Sleeve dancers in China. It is also inspired by 妲己(dájǐ) . Daji was the favorite consort of King Zhou of Shang, the last king of the Shang dynasty in ancient China. She is portrayed as a malevolent fox spirit in legends as well as novels.

Its Chinese name 风华月狐 is from 风华绝代 (be indescribably beautiful and striking),and 风花雪月 (wind, flower, snow and moon -- romantic themes), and 狐(fox)
