The Myst series is a franchise of puzzle-adventure games about solving mysteries while exploring a multiverse of alternate worlds. One of these worlds, or Ages, is called Serenia; it's the last Age you visit in Myst IV: Revelation, and it's somewhat contentious in the fandom for not really fitting the rest of the game(s). So, as a personal fanproject, I'm trying to redesign it. The redesigned version is called Cenotaph.

If you want the longer version where I stream-of-consciousness my way into this idea by rambling about how Serenia does and doesn't fit into Myst's broader arcs and themes (including: steampunk, colonialism, Romanticism vs Enlightenment, female character agency, game design, and audience expectations), here .

Cenotaph is centred on a vast tree trunk which acts as an island-sized nurse log for an otherworldly ecosystem. Katran wrote it as a place of contemplation to work through her grief over the destruction of Riven and the betrayal of their sons, where she brings her regrets to decay and fertilise new growth as a sort of sacrament to represent and catalyse her own emotional healing. She built this traditional Rivenese house herself out of wood and adobe, tucked away in the back of a great ravine in the wood, to serve as her personal residence when she visits.
