Description I recently discovered what a Snallygaster was about a month or two ago, and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite mythological creatures of all time simply for how absurd it is. The legend comes from New England, and has been around since the 1730s. It basically tells of a dragon-like beast that attacks victims from above. When it wants to catch its prey, it opens its mouth, revealing tentacle-like tendrils that reach down, grab the Snallygaster's prey, and then the creature carries them off, never to be seen again. I thought it'd be fun to add the Snallygaster to the list of wild creatures that inhabit the world of my comics, Modern Magic. Here's a bit of in-universe info about them!

The Snallygaster is a bizarre-looking creature, having the body of a dragon, the head of a bird, and a mouth full of anywhere from six to nine tentacles. They are known to inhabit heavily forested northern areas, specifically coniferous woods, but have been known to venture out into mountains and foothills if desperate for food. They're typically solitary creatures, though males will often pair up with females to go on a hunt together. If the two hunt successfully, they will breed. They are also surprisingly very light creatures for their size, hence why their small wings are able to lift them off the ground so easily. Snallygasters can grow to be 12-16 feet tall, 20-25 feet long, and have a wingspan of 8-10 feet. Their bones are very hollow, resulting in them being just as fragile as they are light. These creatures typically only weigh anywhere from 50-70 lbs, and stand almost no chance against much larger creatures or bigger Snallygasters. They normally hunt small woodland animals like foxes, rabbits, and young bears, but have been known to go for large wild unicorns as well, attacking from above and using their tentacles to subdue their prey before carrying them back to their lairs, which are usually large burrows or cave systems. Hundreds of years ago, when these creatures were more plentiful, they would also hunt humans, Reptiliakin, Faeries, basically anyone who dared to venture into the woods alone. This resulted in a mass hunt for the beasts until they were pushed to near extinction, and for a long time, were thought to be extinct until recent rumored sightings were confirmed to be true. They are now under the protection of the Protection of Endangered Magicals Law. It's speculated that there's only 200 to 300 left in the wild, but some think there could be more, anywhere from 500 to 700. They have no known magical abilities or elemental properties, and are also known to be quite docile unless provoked.
