The Kotel - also known as the Western Wall, or the Wailing Wall - in the old city of Jerusalem, is the holiest site of Judaism, the place my people turn to when praying. It is the last remnant of the Jewish Temple that once stood in Jerusalem, destroyed by the Romans in the year 70 CE, and our way to immediate and close contact/communication with G-d. For instance, my people write notes including wishes and prayers, and place them between the ancient stones of the wall.
It’s called “Western Wall” because it’s the western support wall built during the widening of the Temple Mount Plaza. “Western Wall” only came to usage after the 1967 war, a reflection of the feeling that with the reunification of Jerusalem, there was no longer anything to wail about. From that point on, the wall should be a place of celebrations - weddings, mitzvahs…
As for “Wailing Wall”, commonly used by English-speaking non-Jews, that name has its origin in the 19th century when European Jews first began visiting this place to assemble every Friday to mourn the people who lost their lives in their past trying to defend the temple, and the fallen temple itself.
