Yeah, Both characters have one thing in common: Passion. The only difference is Bastila is trying to repress her feelings instead to learn how to deal with them, that's something she never learned from her previous masters. In the other hand, Malak feeds his hate and anger in the hunt of Revan & Bastila, fueling his need for the dark side with passion, even if he isn't so brilliant. For example: Destroying and entire planet just to find one woman is a little illogical from a common sense perspective, as many of us would find an alternative way to ambush her and her companions in Taris and maintain the planet with a strong Sith allegiance as still carried until the bombardment. Darth Revan would handle this situation a lot better though, but nevertheless Malak was driven by his basic instinct, his passion, to deal with his objective.
Anyway, Once Bastila is been captured, Malak would eventually break her to the dark side, but I think that would take him a long time, if you look the idea that she is now in peace with her mother about his fathers death, using that personal matters in a way to break her, it wouldn't work, and she would die with her faith strong in her parents. So, if you were in Malak's shoes, you'll realize that you should attack those feelings that were forbidden to her, something that was neglected to her to feel since her early age and she kept locked deep inside her mind, in a way that she doesn't know how to handle, in a way that she starts to feel insecure from herself and leave her mind open to corrupt her with your evil deeds. And here is were passion enters: Lust, The pleasures of the flesh. You show her a way to let herself go free, allowing her to enjoy the pleasure she was denied to feel after so many years and she'll love it. following that, you destroy her fragile love for Revan, with the premise that he abandoned her at her own in the Leviathan. Yeah, but I think Love works in both ways, it could save you, or it could dig your own grave, but if you have an strong conviction of love for someone, there couldn't be anything that could corrupt you under torture, because love is the last hope you'll loose. that is one of the hardest feelings a Jedi should learn to deal about, because love it could submit you to darkness if your actions and decisions are based to save the one you love from the harm's way at any cost, in a challenge against fate. The Jedi should learn about love and how to deal with it, without taking it as something wrong or inhuman, because love could be a greatest weapon if you look at the idea that you will never give up as long as there is something you care of, for others as much as for yourself. You'll keep fighting as long there is hope. (wow, that was a cursi sentence I just wrote here...)
In the other face of things, Bastila submitted to the Dark Side because she didn't know how to deal with love, how to deal with her affair with Revan, and after she felt in some way betrayed or used by the Jedi Council for her Battle Meditation, she gave up her hope for love (at least, until the moment Revan bring her back to UV-light side) and her inner feelings came up to show her weakness to the Dark Lord's delight.
Malak used that troubled feelings and gave it a direction in the little time he has, while Revan and his companions were on his trail to the Star Forge.
