... and now I seriously want this to happen. Especially as the third movie has been officially announced aaand it's a bit ambiguous who's going to be the main villain. I'm not sure if Mad Hatter is the type that would attract Nolan's attention, but it would be so damn awesome. I would love to see villains that have not been portrayed in any other Batman movies yet.
... and yes, I would also totally want to see Jonathan as March Hare. Although maybe not with bunny ears. Might eat the credibility just a bit.
Out of curiosity, which actor did you have in mind? I know some say Timothy Spall would suit the role, but, err, I just can't quite see it.

I so want the Hatter for the third Nolanverse film.
And shady, ambiguous Scarecrow/Hatter dealings FTW!

Indeed, indeed, there are rumors. After the ridiculous money Dark Knight made, he'd be stupid not to do it. And he seems fond of bringing in villians who weren't in the other movies. And it'd be fairly easy to make the Hatter creepy enough to fit into the Nolanverse. (Hell, there are a couple of Hatter interpretations that are almost a little too dark for Nolanverse.)
CRAZY NERDS ARE CRAZY HOT. They would be an unstoppable duo of twitching insanity and sexual ambiguity. What's not to like?

Yeah, I believe Nolan has said that the only way he would commit to a third movie is if he had a good enough story to tell. But the financial success and general awesomeness of Dark Knight ensure a demand from both the fans and The Powers That Be for a third movie, which always helps. And hopefully Nolan's film-making/storytelling integrity will prevent the franchise from fallling prey to the curse of campiness again.
I'd really like to see what Nolan would do with the Hatter. I think he could strike a good balance with the character. Having him be too much of a manipulative crazy might just seem like "Joker, Part 2". But making him too sympathetic (like in the animated series) wouldn't really fit into the Nolanverse. He'd have to approach him from an entirely different angle than Joker, Scarecrow, or Two-Face, and I know he'd make him fascinating.
