Description Space Shuttle Discovery at Kennedy Space Center Florida

Launch was scrubbed so I missed it Was playing minigolf in Orlando 2 days later and the night sky nuked up as bright as day even though the launch was 2 hours drive away.

Only minor edit tweak, shot on long exposure.

It was a Canon 30D on a tripod. You really need to use a tripod if you want long exposure.

Wow...that is an incredible shot. The way the light flows up through the clouds like that, really, really nice! Is all this from lights around the shuttle, or was it a thruster test or something?

It was the spot lights around the shuttle. The flight was scrubbed that night and launched the next day which I missed.

Sorry to hear you missed the launch. I've never seen one myself (with the exception of one that I was a couple hundred miles away from, haha), but I've heard they're pretty amazing.

OMG! That's truly one of my top 10 best deviations I've seen so far! :woot: The "over-the-horizon"- effect is really brilliant. Looks like either midnight-sun or the birth of a star!

Really liking this! Although I'm not to fond of the crop. It's a bit wide for my taste. I'd suggest to crop it on the tree line to make a more interesting crop, to me the water and pillars are just taking the attention away from the space shuttle anyway. But like I said. It's a matter of taste

ObscuraVista In reply to MartinLundsvoll [2009-10-02 18:04:41 +0000 UTC]

Thought about cropping but if I did crop right up to the treeline then that would be smack dab at the bottom. I'm not fond of having points of interest sitting on the very edges, so that would mean me having to erase / edit out the pillars to add more black space below the trees if I cropped.

And that would defeat the purpose of this particular shot to being as close to what I originally saw.

I totally see your point about the composition. And I did give that some thought as well. But in my eyes the beams of light leads the viewers eyes down to the tree line. Hopefully you don't mind, but I made a quick suggestion for you here [link]

ObscuraVista In reply to MartinLundsvoll [2009-10-03 07:53:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for trying.

For me, that's too square. It would need to be cropped from the left side also. And the pier would have to totally dissappear either cropping more which leaves no space at all below the tree line or erasing them all together and just having extra black.

Also in my own opinion, without the pier in the picture for something for the viewer to recognize as a real thing (even if it kinda takes away from the main subject) the lights just by themselves makes it into more of an abstract art instead of a real tangible location that the viewer can have a sense of place and time.

Wow, great shot! Where was this taken? I shot the most recent launch from over at Marina Park in Titusville. I'd love to get closer next time, though the view of the night launch from where I was was simply spectacular over the river. I really need to get a digital SLR to get some better shots in the future!

ObscuraVista In reply to sandcastler [2009-09-13 07:14:17 +0000 UTC]

I was near the pier at Titusville. I think that's the closest you can get without a pass to the center.

I was there on that very pier, a few launches back. This is exactly the way it felt to be looking out at the launch pad, waiting for it to go up. An amazing feeling, a fantastic capture!! Thank you for sharing this!!
