Description He had already passed away before Candy Stripes realized she loved the old unicorn as if he were her own grandfather.

On her first day of work at Celestia's Home for the Infirm and Aged, the cranky head nurse with the inappropriate cutie mark--Who thinks their talent is nursing when their flank sports a picture of a ratchet?--told her, "Just ignore Doctor Caduceus; his mind's too far gone, but at least he doesn't cause trouble." And he had indeed slipped far into the dark recesses of senility.

But there was something about the way he stared intently at his plate while Candy carefully cut up his dinner into bite size pieces that evening; no easy feat considering she was a pegasus and had to wield the knife in her teeth. Suddenly, he pronounced, "Miss Hooves, there are unicorns who cannot make a finer incision than that with all their magic. Well done!"

After that, the dour old pony who had been a fixture just glowering in the corner all day would wait patiently each morning for Candy to arrive, then make the arduous climb out of his chair and slowly set up the chess board. "I know you're better than this, Miss Hooves. You're letting me win, aren't you?" he would pout from under his bushy white eyebrows as she would stumble into check again and again.

Candy often wondered who the original Miss Hooves was. She learned that Doctor Caduceus had been a university teacher from the important Canterlot ponies who came to visit him around the holidays, but none of those ponies knew a Miss Hooves. She couldn't have been a daughter, he was far too stern and almost coldly professional with her. And yet, there was a twinkle in his eye when he addressed her; he would often be stifling a grin despite himself.

So Candy Stripes continued to be Miss Hooves whenever she was in his presence. They would play chess on the good days, and on the bad days, she would just hold his hoof and stroke his mane while the dementia ravaged his aging mind.

"Caduceus doesn't belong in medicine! Finest diagnostician in twelve generations, and we made her deliver the Evening Post!" he would babble through his sobbing, and meet his ersatz Miss Hooves' eyes while his own filled with tears and apology.

*****
This comic feels very *me*. A mixture of doofy sentimentalism and dark humor all in the same place wrapped up in a wistfully melancholic bow. Dinky came out a little dark, but I am far too proud of that Derpy in the last panel. And if you can't tell, the doctor character grew on me over the week it took to bring this from pencil sketch to charcoal drawing.

I really love how you colour the comic!

Thanks!

It's pretty basic. I do all the grayscale by hand in vine charcoal and charcoal pencil. So it's already shaded to start:
[link]
Then I scan and set the layer as multiply. That way I can put in simple "flat" colors underneath, and the colors will already have the values where they need to be. I'll tweak the hues a little bit warmer for the shadows, but I'm still learning color theory so I don't get too crazy with it yet.

You can see on this one that when the grayscale is right (like Derpy in the last panel) it works really well, and when the shading is muddled (like the first panel) the effect's not so convincing.

Thank you. This one is probably one of my favorites, even if it isn't particularly funny...

i don't really get it...

it seems like before derpy became a mailmare she studied in a medicine school but since she is not a unicorn she was forced to quit and then the last 5 and 6 panels.... don't really get the idea of saying the death.
the descrition isa little confusing.... is this comic a reference of something?

Panels 5 and 6 are hinting at her "unorthodox method" and the reason unicorns dominate the medical profession: since she can't levitate tools with magic, she has to hold everything in her teeth.

When I started rendering on top of the undersketch, I started with the middle row. (I did the building first because I knew it would be the most difficult and least interesting to me.) By the time I finished the doctor in the middle row right, I had read his dialogue in my head a million times and what had started as a stupid puerile joke (non unicorns would have to do surgery and cadaver dissection with their teeth) had become this serious discussion he was having with a student that he obviously thought much about to let her continue her studies this long. What was their relationship? Did he regret his decision to kick her out of school?

Then I drew in his cutie mark which you can now barely see: a symbol of two snakes on a staff called a caduceus--which while I was getting reference material I learned is only associated with medicine due to a mistake by the US Army. One snake on a staff is a Rod of Asclepius, associated with medicine and healing. Two snakes on a staff is associated with Hermes, the god of merchants, gamblers, liars, and thieves. But someone used the two snake symbol for a medical army unit by mistake in 1904 and now you see the symbol in hospitals all the time. Caduceus really doesn't belong in medicine.

"Doctor Caduceus" had a nice old timey ring to it. Old Doc Caduceus, country doctor making housecalls on the frontier before retiring to Canterlot to teach. The idea of him being old and senile and mumbling about how he made the finest medical mind in Equestria carry the mail because unicorns are all racist jerks and he wouldn't stick up for her just kinda popped in my head the morning after I did those panels and I had to rush to get that story into Evernote before I forgot it again.

So panel 5 is her spitting out the obstruction that lands on Dr. Caduceus's snout? The way some hospitals are going these days, the Caduceus symbol is actually more apt.

It's not JUST because she's a pegasus. It's also because she autopsies bodies by eating them. That's what panels 5 and 6 are about

The color contrast helps pop out the primary shapes so it reads more easily. I also think being able to sepia-tone the middle four panels makes up for the fact that I totally forgot to include any indication that we were flashbacking.

I find that when I do an overlay of color on a shaded drawing like this, if the shading is done right (panel 4, Derpy in panel 7) it looks really good. If the shading isn't quite right (panels 1, 2, and Dinky in panel 7), the color makes it even more awkward.

I don't quite get panels 5 and 6 could you explain? like Derpy's rambling in 5 or the doctor looking different in 6.

Heh. Analysis of bile salts from the gall bladder is probably just as effective and much less disgusting than what I had in mind, which is that she determined this through direct surgical exploration, and unicorns have a distinct advantage in not having to hold things in their teeth. RoboKitty moves to the head of the non-unicorn pathology class.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 0

RoboKitty In reply to Ryugaknight [2012-11-14 07:23:55 +0000 UTC]

She tasted the corpse's bile (I THINK it's bile... scratch that, I HOPE it's just bile), which somehow tells her that the cause of death was bowel obstruction. The first time she tries to say this, there's still bile in her mouth, so she spits it at the guy in panel 6 and repeats that the cause of death was bowel obstruction

The fact that she's tasting corpses is the REAL reason the school is kicking her out

Obsequiosity In reply to RoboKitty [2012-11-14 23:10:44 +0000 UTC]

Something like that. There are certain jobs where it really pays not to have to hold things in your teeth. The unicorn caste system is built on that metaphysical inequity.

I didn't get the 5 and 6 panels too, it needs to be done in more blunt way... at least sounds she's making should be ยซNom-Nom-Nomยป :-D.

One more thing. Imagine her doing autopsy and finding a muffin in the Stomach.

Heh. That muffin idea is horrifying.

And yet, I'm still laughing at the possibilities...

Clearly I need help.
