The key point is that this world is not their world. We don't have gun blades.
I originally thought the gunblade concept was cool until I realised the the gun doesn't actually fire bullets at the enemy. The bullet is supposed to ram into the blade making it shake and vibrate causing additional damage.
HOW DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?! That would fucking tear the blade to shreds. Oh, Final Fantasy. You and your ideas.

You know, I've heard that explanation many times, but every time I just can't believe it. xD
I really think they intended for it to fire originally. Like that little explosion you get from hitting R1 is it firing, but they realized when the game was almost finished that they didn't add an CG scene with Squall firing it, or any scenes period where he uses it to shoot... so they were like OH FUCK and made up that excuse.
