Description
The year is 1990, twenty years since the Third World War ravaged the world. In the former United States, a number of successor states and claimants have risen up; notable among them is the American Empire, based in the American South and Great Plains.

The rest of the world has changed drastically. The British Empire has seen a revival of sorts, becoming the world power in the absence of America and the severely weakened USSR. The UK is rivalled only by Japan, which has increased in influence and power (both economic and military) since the War. Many suspect that the UK and Japan will be involved in a Cold War.

The People's Republic of China has become a rump state, with a capital in Changchun. The Republic of China has expanded to include coastal China, while a few warlord states have risen.

The Soviet Union remains, though numerous republics have become independent and several illegitimate warlord states have risen. The Soviet status as a world power has gone down drastically, but some believe that the USSR will regain its status in the next few decades.

The Germanys have united into a single state, slowly over the last few years. This was pushed by the French and British, as was the expansion of a now-democratic Poland into Soviet territory. Yugoslavia survives, but a British-backed coup has given power to King Alexander II, the former Crown Prince.

The British and Japanese have split the US's former Pacific territories, while the British have annexed all of America's Caribbean territories. The Panama Canal is occupied by British military forces, and Hawaii is a protectorate under the de jure control of a Prime Minister and Parliament, but under the de facto control of the British military. Canada - a strong British ally - has turned Maine, the Michigan Upper Peninsula, and Alaska into territories under military protection. Maine will hold a referendum to become a province, the Upper Peninsula will likely become part of Ontario, and Alaska's status is undecided; it will either become a province, or will be made an independent republic.

The United Nations still exists, its headquarters in Geneva since New York City's destruction. The Security Council is comprised of the United Kingdom, France, the Republic of China, Japan (which has taken the Soviet Union's seat), and Canada (which has taken the United States' seat). Japan and the RoC are allied in all-but-name (Japan supplies the RoC with weapons and aid, China supplies Japan with political support), the UK and Canada are very close, while France is the neutral force in the Council. The French want to become a world power, but know that siding with either the Japanese or the British will tip the new balance in the world; and so they wait for their time to shine.
