Description First appearance: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991)

Mothula from ”The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past”. It’s a moth-like boss that lurks deep down in the caves of Skull Woods. While its only real attacks are three-parting blasts of energy rings, the boss area is full of moving spike blocks that makes the whole thing a tad harder.

Man, I had a lot of problem with this sucker. Mothula itself is actually quite easy to defeat, but those frickin’ spike blocks makes the fight a nightmare. In other words, the real fight was against the environment, rather than the actual boss.

Thought the bosses from the 2D games could need some love, so Mothula with its bright palette and infuriating encounter came up first in my mind. While there is a little official art on this voluminous vermin, I also looked at the in-game sprite to get a reference of the appearance. It wasn't so hard to draw, actually. As a 2D-sprite, it doesn't have that much detailing, so I added some myself. The hardest part was either to get the energy rings to contrast the orange wings (I solved that by making the rings more reddish and the wings a tad duller), or to get a decent texture on the wings (smudged out the patterns). Other than that, it was a relatively easy drawing, and I am happy with the result, not least as I have based it more on a pixel sprite than any previously drawn piece.
