I've noticed this male figure in several other of your works, is that you by any chance?

Yes, this is indeed me. However, I made myself a little buffer than I really am.

Haha. Lol. I would never be able to tell. I've only seen your da photo, but in you're drawings, may I just say you look devilishly handsome.

Oh, yeah -- that's just the drawings! Us artists have a sneaky way of making ourselves a bit more, shall we say, beautiful in our renderings.

Thank you very much!

I do draw requests, but, unfortunately, not at the moment due to a hectic schedule.

Hopper definitely had this odd sexual underside to some of his paintings. You are doing sort of PASTICHES of his works and I find it very interesting and fun.
I don't see the girl so much as a prostitute, but maybe a woman of easy virtue, and the element of the dark skinned suitor gives it sort of a taboo quality. Obviously these days mixed race couples are no big deal, but the images you are referencing in your drawings are of another time when it would have been considered scandalous.

odavis In reply to MJBivouac [2009-10-20 14:34:40 +0000 UTC]

Yep, you read into my work very well, my friend. The taboos of mixed race coupling is exactly what I was trying to convey here, and in most of the series by keeping that old time Hopper feel. I did not do that with "Nancy, Let Your Hair Down For me," [link] I tried to modernize it, which in a way does not quite work for what I was trying to convey. Oh, well.

MJBivouac In reply to odavis [2009-10-20 17:05:31 +0000 UTC]

Some of the modernizations you attempted in some of the images, don't quite work so well for me. The MAC computer on the desktop kind of 'dates' the image much MORE than even the original with the period phone and typewriter, I think. Also when you have the women look directly at the viewer, and you sex them up just a little too much(in my opinion)then the piece is not so successful. But you have TWO in particular that I think are very successful.

Yep. I totally agree. Looking back now, I do remember that this one was the very first one completed for the series. I had yet to figure out where I wanted to take the series. I just knew that i wanted to give Hopper a tribute for his 40th anniversary of his passing. If I could do it all over again, I would definitely keep the old timey feeling, tone the girl down a bit and get rid of that Mac! Hahahahaha.

It was a great exercise though. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I can clearly see that your skills really did improve as the series progressed.

Scianka [2009-02-03 15:43:35 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't know what E.Hopper would say about your drawings, but to me the value of his works was not showing prostitute-like women. What do you think?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

odavis In reply to Scianka [2009-02-03 22:30:37 +0000 UTC]

I would THINK that the value Of Mr.. Hopper's works did show prostitutes or whatever the viewer would like to imagine his women to be. That's what art does.

You see, you have to remember the times back then. Daisy Dukes and really short skirts were not invented then, if they were, I am sure Mr. Hopper would have had his girls in them. For instance in "South Carolina Morning" [link] this outfit on this lady might have been consider "prostitute like" as you call it.

Now as for my series, I explained here [link] that I was taking Hopper's work to another level. MY LEVEL. I could have EASILY sat there and copied Hopper's work stroke for stroke and vision for vision to please people like you, but really what good it that? So instead, I decided to please myself and people who can appreciate originality, so i decided to give it my own personal touch and I'd like to think that Mr. Hopper would have appreciated that.

Be seeing you.

Great picture, I like your style. It has some classic beauty that is hard to put in words. By any chance, wouldn't you be interested in illustrating my story:

Thanks! Sorry for the long delay in response. When they switched the system, I lost a lot of favs and comments. Yours was one them. Thankfully I was strolling around in my gallery and noticed that I had not commented back on this.

Anyway, I enjoyed reading your story. And if I were not so swamped right now with side projects, etc. I would love to illustrate it. However, my next series (untitled as of yet) is based somewhat around witches, castles, dragons, cathedrals, etc. So if you like, if they work, you can use or post any of them you wish as a picture to go with your wonderful story.
