Description
New OC! I’ve had her in mind for a while actually, so I’m glad I finished it! Heads up, this is not a happy story. It’s pretty depressing, actually. Read at your own risk.
Mirror Image
Nickname: Mirror, Mir (Pronounced "Meer")
Race: Unicorn
Talent: Light Manipulation. This can involve sucking the light out of a room with magic and expelling it, and can even include manipulating the way you see thing. She can technically make herself invisible, which is really just making the light not hit herself. Manipulating light can make for some crazy visual effects.
Her story: When Mirror was born, she was not expected. She was a twin, and only one foal was expected. Her sister, only 4 minutes older, was named Dazzling Comet. When Mirror was born, she was given her name because the twins were completely identical.
Growing up, the sisters were inseparable. Dazzling Comet took her job as an older sister very seriously, despite the tiny age gap. Comet was generous and loving, and prefered to keep to herself, with the exception of her favourite (And only) sister. She got her cutie mark fairly young, and true to her name, got it for astronomy. Mirror didn’t get hers until a year later, which caused her quite a lot of anxiety. After all, the twins were identical, and the same age, why wouldn’t she have gotten hers? However, once Mirror got her cutie mark, she wished she hadn’t.
Mirror was practicing her magic with Comet. Simple things, like levitation. They decided to try a simple light spell, which is very common and quite useful, so they turned out the lights. Mirror tried it, and she put all her energy into it, trying to impress her sister, who had always had an easier time with magic. The resulting blast of light was so powerful, that Comet was blinded. Mirror heard a blood-curdling scream, followed by crying. Their parents came running, and Comet was taken to the hospital. In the panic, Mirror didn’t realize that she had gotten her cutie mark.
Comet’s blindness was untreatable, and permanent. Mirror couldn’t believe it. She had wanted to get her cutie mark for years, and she had gotten it by blinding her sister. How could this be her destiny? Meanwhile, Comet withdrew from everyone. She was an astronomer, how could she live her life, never able to see the night sky again? To forever be blanketed in terrifying darkness? She decided that she couldn’t, and took her own life.
Mirror was horrified. Her sister, her best friend, her ONLY friend, had killed herself. Mirror blamed herself. She grew terrified of getting close to anypony again. Her parents found it too difficult to see Mirror, when all they could see was Comet, and they grew apart. Mirror moved out. Mirror spent months practicing her talent, to gain control, to never hurt anypony again. In that time, she learned how to become invisible to everypony around her. She prefered it that way, to not be seen as “The mare who’s sister killed herself” and decided that was going to be her life. She became a ghost. Ponies wondered where she was. They knew she still lived in her house, but nopony saw her.
She actually spends a lot of time in public, and has become quite a pony-watcher. Perhaps to make up for her lack of social interaction, she likes to watch other ponies, and follow along with their lives. Maybe if she just tried to talk to some of them...
Personality: Before the accident, she was very shy and self-conscious. She often hid behind her more confident sister. Mirror loved books, and it was always the best way to get her to open up. She was good in class, and liked to tutor foals part-time. She had quite a gift for singing, which only Comet knew about. When she was happy, she would usually hum to herself. After the accident, she stopped everything she used to enjoy. Maybe someday she’ll heal enough to find joy again.
Notes:
- This is THE FIRST TIME that I've drawn a full body. Not just a not-moving pony that a practically traced, but one where I actually tried to figure out anatomy! I looked at actual horses for like 2 hours. Seriously. I know it doesn't look right, like a weird mix between an MLP pony and a real horse that probably has broken legs, but it's my first real try and I'm pretty happy with it! Besides, when have I ever tried for show-style anyway? That said, and advice or critiques would be amazing!
- I feel like every time I draw something my shading improves. I definitely tried some new stuff here, and I'm pretty happy with it! I'm trying to think of ponies as more 3D, and really imagine how the light would hit everywhere, even though I use a very non-realistic style.
- I freaking love her mane. I swear, I spent more time designing the mane than anything else.
- I'm not going to be making a formal reference sheet for her, since I was never happy with the style I used, but I have a color guide that I used to come up with her colors here. Fluttershy is actually pretty good for helping me come up with colors. Her mane is so simple! I also have her cutie mark here. So if I'm commissioning you, or art trade, or whatever, feel free to use those!
