Our consumerist world can also be compared to Airstrip One under Ingsoc...
Prolefeed = adverts
Big Brother = the Elite
Inner Party = bankers
Outer Party = Randroids & economists who support trickle-down theory
Emmanuel Goldstein = Pariah states (who are just as bad)
Bellyfeel = the folly that dictates that our form of "capitalism" is working
Thoughtcrime = rebellion against the current order
Room 101 = societal rejection

After reading a brief summary of the plot of that book, I think you are partially right. The thing is, people are not exactly preprogrammed in our society - it's just that they are moulded during childhood (for example, schools are employee factories and not educational institutes as many would think of them.
I guess that some of us just refuse to be moulded by the Elite. Like me. Heck, do you know of anyone who thinks that they're an anthropomorphic animatronic chicken?
