Acrylic on canvas (16 x 18)A subspecies of the Hector's dolphin, the Maui's dolphin is found only off the northwest coast of New Zealand's North Island and is one of the smallest cetaceans. It is also the world's rarest: In early 2012, an updated survey determined that the entire population consists of only 55 individuals - a decrease of over 50% since the previous estimate in 2005. The main contributing factor to the Maui's dolphin's decline is believed to be commercial fishing methods, particularly gillnets, that result in a significant number of dolphins taken as bycatch.
The New Zealand government is proposing to extend the current protected area for Maui's dolphins and is looking for submissions from people like you to guide their decision. i'm doing a hector/maui skateboard design w/ peggy oki. it is certainly critical for them right now. the vaquita dolphin in the gulf of baja is losing ground fast, also.

I was terribly saddened when I heard the news. This is a beautiful painting. Personally I don't think the subspecies has very long

I heard about the Hector's dolphin(was reading a dolphin book, chapter: endangered dolphins)
But I didn't heard about subspecies!

It was only in 2002 that it was determined that they are in fact a subspecies of the Hector's rather than a different population of them. And Hector's dolphins are endangered too.

Thank you so much! I was anxious about painting them because references are so scarce. There are slight skeletal (and of course genetic) differences between Maui's and Hector's, but they're otherwise moreorless identical. So sad how close they are to extinction.
