βReverieβ by Oer Wout is a digital photograph, dimensions, camera, and settings unknown. Although my eyes are immediately drawn to the, majestic tree that sits just off center and to the right of the picture frame, I realize after looking at this a bit longer, that it is not the main focal point. The main focal point of this image is the smaller thinner tree that sits forward and to the right of larger tree. The crispness of the foreground is in perfect juxtaposition with the vertical lines of the background trees and is surrounded by mist that creates an, otherworldly quality that keeps your eyes moving around the frame. The late afternoon lighting is filtered and coming in from the left and adds dramatic highlights onto the left and backside of the forward trees, grassy knoll, dried leaves and moss on the front foreground. Not only does the lighting enhance the drama and definition of the wooded forest, but it also serves to brighten the hues of gold, orange, red and green. The total effect of this type of filtered light adds a mysterious and ethereal quality that could not have been achieved unless taken at the right time of day.
The depth of field is more on the shallow side and you can begin to see itβs misty effects starting at the large center tree and to the back. Everything from this point forward is crisp and clear with beautiful color and imagery. Again, the overall effect of the contrast between the mist and sharp foreground keep the viewers attention by adding a touch of the mystical. Which allows us to think of another time and place. Perhaps this was the place that would have surrounded Sir Lancelot and Gweninvere during their illicit meetings and love affair. Another lovely aspect of this image is the 3 dimensionality of the whole. Everything I have described above, as well as, the forward Left shadows allow the viewer to also feel as though they are a part of this scene and that they are walking through it on a warm fall day. The way the framing and cropping have been done, are perfectly balanced and proportionate and keep your eyes roving around the image with interest and wonder.
As I said before, the colors of gold, orange, red and green are tiny bits of stand out spectacles that seem to glitter like jewels amongst the background of shadows and muted light. The golden highlights bounce off the edges of the main focal point and leaves, which gives the illusion of great depth. All of which add to the majestic beauty and mystery of this enchanting photo. It serves to captivate the viewerβs imagination and sense of history at the same time while motivating our passions and imagination. From the moment I first saw this lovely work of art, I was transfixed, captivated, enthralled, and truly taken aback. Looking at this work gives me a sense of serenity and peace and makes me happy. This is the kind of artwork that I would love to own.
