Thank you so much for uploading this!! I've been trying to figure things out on my own and, (by trial and error,) have found about a hundred ways to NOT make kanzashi. Seriously, I am extremely grateful.

Had a good first couple of tries, that's for sure. But I need more colorful fabric remnants and a ton of starch or something

BedeckedInBeads [2011-07-07 01:07:46 +0000 UTC]

Great tutorial! But there is one thing that no one ever explains, maybe you can enlighten me?

I've been trying to make the kanzashi with the traditional rice glue and I have trouble keeping the ends of the petals that go towards the center in that nice neat point. Everyone else has perfect pointed petal ends. I've gone and starched my fabric to keep it crisp but that aside I'm a bit lost as of how to go around this problem. Is it perhaps because I am using cotton and not silk for my fabric?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

offgenemi In reply to BedeckedInBeads [2011-07-07 12:57:58 +0000 UTC]

I never tried that technique with cotton, silk absorbs rice glue very easily so it is very easy to make the cherry blossom style petals. cotton is usually much thicker. when you put a lot of glue to that corner it might change the color of the fabric. these are my guesses
super crisp starched fabric never helped me, so I tend to go the mid way.
even with silk I had to practice

Very helpful!
Only, how long I cen let petals stand in rice glue? Wow, even over hour? than it can dry out..
I think I can use potato starch as substitue for rice starch = rice glue. Theoretically
If you use wooden surface, not "new and sparkling". it can absorbs water more = shorter time to dry.

Sorry, just some general ideas - waiting, if you will approve them or deny them

offgenemi In reply to Laila-chan [2011-05-30 03:57:19 +0000 UTC]

thank you!
I live in a very humid environment so my flowers dry completely after 24 hours
I actually use the glue I buy from internet from japanese stores. so I never tried potato starch, let me know if it works!
I dont use wood anymore actually I use a piece of paper I laminated a few years back, I get most of my glue back
but I see traditionally they use an old piece of wood like you said

Laila-chan In reply to offgenemi [2011-05-30 19:28:56 +0000 UTC]

I dont know, how rice paste works, so I cant compare potato starch
I am begginer, to be said, so I am sorry if I gave you feeling, that I am doing kanzashi longer time. I am onl talking about material possibilities in center of Europe without "internet shopping"
I appreciate your traditional ways and I am happy a lot of people use them I will have to use, what I have at hand, so textil glue, hot glue, potato starch, wooden cutting board. I applied for kanzashi group, I hope I will be able to contribute for it something nice soon

Is there an acceptable substitute for rice glue? If not, where can I buy some?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

offgenemi In reply to zanessa4ever [2010-01-25 01:30:22 +0000 UTC]

I didnt use anything else, for some projects you can use hot glue but I personally hate to work with it.
You can buy it from online stores, just google rice glue or nori paste. some paper related stores sell them.
good luck!
