You should never pick up wild animals. While I agree that he is cute and it is tempting, as soon as you draw near or touch a wild animal, you are infecting the animal with human scent. If you put him back after this, the mother surely abandoned him. Mother rabbits will leave their young for days at a time, so you probably saw him and thought he was abandoned, but he wasn't. I'm not criticizing you, just educating you so that the next time you see a baby bunny, you leave it alone and don't touch it.

Hmm, I was just doing a little research on this and some say rabbits do care about human scent and some don't.
Hm... still not a good idea to pick them up though. Unless you know for a fact they are in danger.

Rabbits and hares do in fact smell human scent. Animals are highly intelligent. They can tell if one of their babies has a neurological or developmental problem even if the baby is only a couple of days old. I work at a wildlife rehab center.
