Description (I'm participating in the Alphabeasts challenge over at [link] . The idea is to draw a mythical or fantasy inspired beast for each letter of the alphabet. New stuff posts every Monday. It's open to anyone who might want to participate, so go over and have a look.)

Happy Halloween, amigos! This week’s Alphabeast entry for the letter C is a form of monstrous dog called the Cadejo. Cadejos show up in the folklore of many Spanish speaking South American cultures. They are said to be two sorts of Cadejos, a white dog that protects travelers and drunkards and a dastardly black form, sometimes said to be the Devil himself, who attacks and kills wanderers. They supposedly smell terrible, like urine and burning sulphur and have goat-like cloven hoofs. The black Cadejo is shackled with a glowing, red hot chain on his front legs and comes in three distinct forms:

In the largest form, the black Cadejo is an aspect of the Dark One, walking the earth. Generally this form will not attack or kill travelers but whomever sees him will experience misfortune and tragedy. Those who turn their backs on a Cadejo are said to be beset with insanity. Supposedly not even the white Cadejo can stop this form of evil.

The most common form of the Cadejo is approximately the size of a cow. He is a viscous and terrifying beast who takes great pleasure in completely petrifying his victims with gruesome calls and noises before finally bursting forth and tearing the person to shreds. If the white Cadejo is present he will attempt to prevent his counterpart from attacking humans.

The last sort is the offspring between the “regular” Cadejo and a common dog. This is the only form that is possible for a human being to kill, although with great difficulty. If a hybrid Cadejo is successfully slain, it will rot in a matter of seconds with an awful odor, leaving a mark on the soil where nothing will grow. Rather than bite and tear the flesh of it’s victims, the small Cadejo will kick and peck with his snout, causing madness.

Great picture, but let me correct you something, the cadejo is part exclusively of the folklore of Central American countries from Chiapas to Panama.
By the way, the walker of the center reminds me of another Central American folklore character, The Sombrerón
