Ruins and Riddles

Ani frowns as she listens to Futo ramble on about how excited he is for exploring the ruins a migration observer had stumbled upon in their travels. He held the map in his hand as he leads Ani to their destination. She looks up from Futo to see a large decrepit gate in the distance.

Ani looks down to the small archeologist and taps his shoulder, startling him out of his rant about the artifact and the history behind it. “Ah we’re here!” He said, bubbling with energy as he raced to the ruin’s entryway. Ani yells after him, running after him as it was her job to protect the archeologist from the dangers of old ruins such as this one.

Ani did cave diving and ruin exploration a lot and she knew what to expect when diving into one holding such a rare item within. She caught up to Futo and stopped him as he was about to enter the ruins. She turned him to face her and glares at her little companion. “Listen. I know that your excited to find this artifact but we have to take precautions with this place. It might have traps scattered all around here. Plus, this place looks very old. Loose foundation is also a problem too. You have experience in places like this so I expect you to be careful Futo.” She warned, eyeing the place warily. Futo nods and smiles,” yes! I know the dangers potentially lurking in that place and I’m prepared to face them if we come across them.” He looks back to the battered gate and turns to face it. “Shall we then?”

Ani did not like this place one bit. She shivered as a breeze past by, causing her fur to stand on end. She continued following Futo as they maneuver themselves through the old ruins. Nothing too spectacular happened as she only had to deactivate some minor traps and move rock and debris out the way so they can pass through. However, this did not ease her mind. It just made her very paranoid and on edge. Futo however was very ecstatic about the ruins and was busy examining the rock formations that had runes carved into them that littered the large clearing they were currently in.

Ani looks around the area, curious of all the runes decorating the area. She looks back to Futo, who was walking around a large rock formation that had many runes carved to it. Ani had a bad feeling settle in her gut as she realized that particular rock had a weak floor holding it. Holes litter all around the rock, showing that the place has a second floor beneath the one they are currently standing on. She slowly walked over to Futo, her eye glued to the floor as she made her way over. “uh Futo… watch your step…this floor is not steady.” She stated, pausing as she hears the rocks shift as she walks over to the archeologist.

Futo looks over and looks down as well and makes a small gasp as he sees the holes all around him. He smiles as he sees another floor beneath them,” Oh a second level! How fortunate! I see that some of the rocks below have them as well!” he states as he quickly kneels to the floor, causing the rocks under the small archeologist to shift. Ani growled as she moved a little faster to get to him,” didn’t I tell you that this floor is unstable?” She grunted out as Futo moves to stand back up. “Oh sor-" as Futo stood, one of the rocks came free from its binding, causing Futo to slip, falling down into the whole to the second floor below. Ani yells his name and quickly runs over after him, “FUTO! Are you alright?!” Ani asked as she looks into the whole to see the small CCCat gripping the edge of the whole he fell in.

“I’m alright! Just help up out of this whole?” he asked. Ani sighs in relief and helps the poor archeologist up. She managed to grab his arm as she heard several stones shift under her suddenly. She and Futo scream as the floor crumbles underneath her, both falling down to the second floor. Ani immediately brings Futo to her chest to protect him as they tumble down deeper into the ruins. She yelps in pain as she hits several large tree branches. She lets go of Futo accidentally as the hits another tree a little to hard, knocking the wind out of her.

She hears Futo screaming as he was still falling to the ground below. Ani gets up and jumps down to catch him, wincing in pain as she jumps down the trees. Futo attempts to find a pace to land but his small stature leaves branches out of his reach. He looks down below and was relieved to see water. But the relief was short lived as he gets closer and see spikes jutting out of the water. He shrieks even louder as he desperately tried to find something to stop his fall.

He closed his eyes as he braced for a painful impact but it never came. He opens his eyes to see that his descent was halted. He looks down at the spikes in the water then around to see the area around him. A low, pained growl comes from above him and he flinches, looking up to see Ani hanging from a tree. Her hand secured around his waist and keeping him from falling to his death. He chuckled nervously as she glares at him with a unamused expression.” …. I told you to watch your step.” She grumbled out as she gently drops Futo on the stone floor under the tree she was perched on. She soon joins him and sits with a groan. She holds her side tightly, that fall really did a number on the bigger CCCat.

Futo scurries over to look at her wounds.” Oh, I am so sorry! I should have watched what I was doing! Let me look at your wounds!” he states as he touched the areas she was injured in. Ani flinches and lays back on the ground as Futo treated her wounds,” I see that your pretty bruised up but no broken bones.” He explained as he let her relax for a bit to look around the place they fell in.

Beyond the pond full of spikes Futo was able to see large trees growing out of the building up to the floor that they came from. More runes covered the area along with intricate stone arches and pathways leading deeper into the ruins. He never thought this place will be huge! His eye looks around more, excitement returning as he stood up to get a better view of his surroundings. A grunt from Ani makes him turn around. A warning glare fixed on her face. “I’m not going to far! I promise Ani! Once your ready to continue let me know.” He grins and continues exploring the second floor. Ani eyes him warily as she rests. Still regretting stepping foot into this ruin. She hopes they find what they are looking for as she is not ready to risk her life again in this place.
