Spending more time on the streets (stealing and work) than at home with his family taught Hakuto many things. The main ones being "find any loopholes and shortcuts", "observe then act", and "trust no one". Most of them still stuck with him even to this day. Even if he still has trust issues, it's not as bad as it use to be when he was younger, so doesn't mean people people couldn't earn his complete trust. It would take a lot of effort to get to that point, but it could be accomplished over time and with patience. Albeit it may be a challenge with a guy like Hakuto - who seem like he has a stick up his butt majority of the time - especially with his occasional mood swings and mouth that's full of trash. However, living in poverty for so long also helped him become compassionate, so he's not as heartless as he appeared to be. He can be harsh and a total bitch, but it's because he cares (as cliche as that sounds) or maybe because he really just hate your guts. If he accepts you, Hakuto will try to be as understanding as possible with his own odd and subtle way of showing it. And it is also suggested not to tell or show him your weakness(es), because he may never decide to use it against you one day (not always with ill intention though).

Tried to pickpocket Clow Reed at age fourteen, got caught red-handed and Clow promised not to turn him in if Hakuto joined him. It turned out to be all planned, and Clow never intended to report Hakuto from the start. Hakuto becomes an apprentice to Clow.
Hakuto's family were mostly fishermen from the Western Region. One would think business was well for merchants and fishermen in that area, but during the Age of Desolation, it affected them just as greatly. Poverty and famine hit everyone hard, especially for the lower-class families. Prices for everything were inflated, taxes increased, people fell ill, and lack of care for public sanitation caused water to be contaminated from trash and bacteria, leading to less fishes to catch. Hakuto's mother was one the many unlucky individuals who fell victim to the plague that spread throughout the land at that time.

After his mother passed away, there was only his father and grandmother left for him. His father was always too nice and optimistic for his own good in Hakuto's opinion. He always saw good in everyone, and had faith in everything. Hakuto wondered why and how could his father could remain so positive even after everything - losing his wife, being crippled by thieves who tried to steal their fishes, and how penniless their family was. His father was a strange but gentle man.

When the war happened, his father had volunteered to join, even if it was against Hakuto's will. He would cry and beg his father not to join the army - knowing it would be like sending his father to death's arms. Survival rate wouldn't be high for a man like his father, especially when he was crippled. So Hakuto would insist on going with him, or taking his place. But his father would embrace him tightly, stroking his head, assuring him that he would be back. "It would be an honor to fight for the kingdom, if it contributes to the greater good for the future. But who would watch over your grammy if you came with me? Keep fighting for the better future and make me proud..." he would say in a tender voice, before he left. But he never did came back even after the war ended.

Selling fish was no longer the main option for money anymore, even though the conditions were slowly starting to improve by a minuscule after the new Clow ruler took reign. Water started clearing up as well, but not enough (plump) fishes returned. Around the same time, Hakuto discovered his new powers with water. The nearest local wells were either empty or super contaminated, so he went to gather a bucket of water from the coastline one day. With a white bowl, he would scoop some out and movie his finger in the water in circular motions to check how clean it is. But the water was still a murky color, so even boiling it won't help. Hakuto had no idea what he could do anymore, water was essential to them, plus his grandmother needed clean water to go with her medication, or she would never get better. He honestly didn't want to lose the only family he had left. At that moment, he had really wished miracles were possible. Something that could turn the murky water to pure water. However, slowly and gradually through his fingertip, a miracle did happen. Hakuto was able to see the brownish yellow colored water slowly become translucent white again. After discovering what he could do, Hakuto would practice every day by the edge of the shore to test his abilities, as well as attempt to clean the water faster. However, with his current ability and recent discovery, he couldn't do much and could only purify very small volumes of water. And whenever he couldn't sleep at night, he would work a bit to tire himself out. Work as in waiting until everyone was gone to carry buckets of sea water to cleanse and dump into the nearest well, because one, it would be convenient for him, and two, he knew it wasn't just his family that needed clean water. And when he comes home from his ‘nightly job’, he would pass out from exhaustion the moment he reached his mattress.

Without fishing, the only quick way to get money was... well... to steal money. Hakuto didn't particularly like doing it, but he couldn't be choosy either when finding a job was just as hard at fourteen. Getting beat up or caught was not an option either. So he had to plan carefully, finding an easy target, before pick-pocketing some dumb person who looked to be on the wealthier side. Using the lame trick of tripping and spilling a bucket of water on the target, Hakuto would apologize profusely and try to 'dry' them up with a handkerchief. But behind all that, Hakuto would be drawing out the water to pull the targets' money pouches to his own sleeve. It had been successful thus far, until one day when his target was a certain man with glasses and a bright presence. This bespectacled man saw through Hakuto's trickery and caught him red-handed. Being an amateur at that time, his only offensive magic ability were tiny squirts of water from his fingertips. Of course none of his kicking, hitting and biting worked on the older man either. So with no other choice, Hakuto bit back his pride and pled mercy and for the man to not report and arrest him, because he needed to find money for his grandmother's medication. He had hoped to gain some sympathy from the man to let him off scot-free, but little did he know this man with the bright presence was the king, Clow Reed.

As it turned out, Clow Reed had tried to negotiate with him by saying he wouldn't report Hakuto if he agreed on one condition. The older man said he was actually looking for him - or more specifically, it was because he noticed Hakuto's powers - and asked for his help to 'change the kingdom'. Naturally, Hakuto would laugh and think it's bullshit and that this guy was probably a fraud too. Because why in the world would he trust this guy, even if he was from the Clow linage, everyone from that family proved to be bad news as far as he knew. Why else would they even be suffering significantly from the war? However, his father's final words would keep replaying in his mind, over all his cynical thoughts, making him reconsider a little. Not to mention, this guy still might report him if Hakuto refused, no matter how airy and 'nice' this man looked. Clow had also offered to help personally train him and make him stronger. And if there really was some sort of benefit coming from this agreement, Hakuto would consider giving Clow a chance to convince him, even if this guy was fishy. By the end of the day, he realized Clow Reed had been joking from the start and had no intentions of actually reporting him. But Clow still took him in, fed him, as well as giving him a talk. And that was how Hakuto officially agreed joined Clow in his journey, as well as the army. Hakuto had originally thought he was the only 'special' one, but it turned out there were three other kids - much to his dismay. It took about almost a whole year for Hakuto to trust the king, and to actually have faith in the kingdom to finally bring peace. But during his time traveling and training with Clow, along the other apprentices, it did help shed some positive light in his eyes. And Hakuto decided his decision to follow Clow wasn't so bad after all...
