Oh Downton, I'm so hooked up with you right now! :'DI just love this series and I can't wait for the second season which will (unfortunately) come next year in Finland...

Thomas and O'Brien smoking is my favourite.
I like Thomas, even though I think I'm not supposed to, and I don't approve of the things he does.
But O'Brien is *brutal*, I mean, Thomas is a bit of a dick (taking out Daisy when he knew William loved her) but O'Brien killed an unborn child because she was annoyed!
I also like Anna, but I think Bates is a bit of a drip sometimes.

Have you seen the second and third season yet?
'cause I think Thomas has pretty good character development there and especially in the second season. I mean after that season you can really understand why he behaves like he does.
In the first season Anna and Bates were my favourite character and couple, but I began get bored with them and in the third season I didn't really care what is going to happen to Bates. I have started to dislike him, which is quite odd because he is so decent character.

I have seen series 2 and 3, and I agree, Thomas's development has been good especially as Downton isn't the best show for showing details (I love it, don't get me wrong, but they use broad brush strokes in terms of story-telling and characters). So I think they I well with I'm an personally I think he is the most interesting character.
I also like Daisy, Edith and Tom, and Old Lady Grantham rocks my world.
Like you I liked Bates more in series 1 but, omigod, they dragged that storyline out sooo badly! It was almost as bad as Mary's and Matthew's, but at least those two had other suitors etc.
I think they made Bates a bit too good.
Sometimes characters need to be a bit morally grey to be likeable or interesting. Thomas improved because he stopped being pure evil and instead evolved into being more complex.
But the opposite happened with Bates. It's like they took s1 Bates (hinted dark-side/dark past, secretive) and made him so good in s2 and 3 (long suffering martyr of a crazily unnecessarily evil wife)that it sort of wiped of his personality.

All this is lovely - but the smallest icon, of the Smokers is a total winner! Thomas&O'Brien - I hate them so much that I actually love them

Oh man, O'Brien isn't a "frikin' bitch". She's one of the most complex characters in Downton Abbey, the show would be dull without her.

But with Thomas, I don't know what to think about him. I have a love-hate -relationship with him :'D First I'm like: yay Thomas is cool and so on, and then I want to smash his pretty arrogant face :'D
