May 5th is not even a full holiday in Mexico. It is a local holiday in one Mexican state in remembrance of a battle.
Very similar to how the April 17th is Patriots Day in Massachusetts and Maine, in remembrance of the Battle of Lexington & Concord. (It's only celebrated in Maine because what is now Maine was part of Massachusetts in 1775)
