It had been weeks since Matthew had seen you last. You still texted him, but whenever he asked you to hang out, you always told him that you were busy. He knew that you had a boyfriend and that you were sort of obligated to spend time with him, but still… You were his best friend. You had always been there, ever since you were kids.

He missed you so badly that it hurt.

There wasn't a lot to do without you around. His social life was already fairly poor, but he'd never really realized how few friends he had until you started dating that guy. He would always be that guy to Matthew. Honestly, he didn't really care for that guy. He wasn't entirely sure why.

His phone beeped meekly, signaling a text message. He checked it, and his insides suddenly seemed to get a bit tangled up. You were asking him to meet you at your house. He texted back a hasty affirmation and dashed out the door, pausing only to grab his hoodie. You didn't live too far away, and he was on your doorstep in fifteen minutes. He had just raised his hand to knock when you opened the door. The first thing that he noticed was that you were in your pajamas at two in the afternoon. There were dark circles under your eyes, and it looked like you had brushed your hair with your fingers as you walked to the door. But when you smiled, it was bright and happy.

"Hey, Matt," you grinned, wrapping your arms around his torso. He hugged you back, noting that you didn't usually hold him this tightly, or this long. He was about to say something when you pulled away, gesturing for him to follow you into the house.

He took a seat beside you on the couch, glancing around. The last time he'd been in here was right after you'd started dating that guy. There had been pictures of you and him all around, on various dates. They weren't there anymore. In their places were…

"Is that us?" he asked, picking up the photo on the coffee table. You grinned and nodded.

"Yeah, at the park. Remember? Al took the picture with your mom's camera." So that was why it was so blurry. The kids in the picture looked about five, so Alfred would have been six.

"He couldn't hold still long enough for the camera to focus on us," Matthew observed. He put the photo back in its place, then glanced over at you. There was something in your eyes that worried him. You looked as lonely as he'd been feeling the past few weeks.

"Are you okay?"

You smiled again, but it was different from before. Sadder.

"I'll live," you promised him, reclining against the sofa and staring at the ceiling. "Being single isn't the end of the world."

Matthew hadn't really been expecting that one. "Wait, he broke up with you?" he asked, a little bit angry. Who in their right mind would give you up? You were perfect! In fact…

You shook your head. "We broke up. It was mutual. Actually…" you laughed bitterly. "I called it off, and then he said that he'd been planning to break up with me anyway. I wasn't really listening to what he was saying, but I think he said something about another girl."

It was really hard to make Matthew angry, but at that moment, he was furious. Maybe he wouldn't overturn a table or anything, but he certainly wanted to track down your [ex-]boyfriend and tell him off. Well, maybe not. That guy was a lot bigger than he was.

"I thought you loved that guy," he said quietly. "What made you change your mind?" It was a while before you answered. When you did, you spoke nearly as quietly as he did.

"You."

He blinked, wondering if he'd heard you correctly. "Huh?"

"I missed you," you elaborated, sitting up and locking eyes with him. "I realized that we weren't hanging out anymore, and I felt really bad. You were much better company than that guy. In fact, I'd rather date you." Your hands flew to your mouth and your eyes widened.

The room seemed a lot warmer to the both of you and you just sat there for what seemed like years, but must have been only about twenty seconds. Finally, you lowered your hands.

"I'm sorry," you said, a bit flustered. "I don't know what-"

The next thing you both knew, Matthew was kissing you. Neither of you were entirely sure how it happened, though you thought that he had started it. You quickly got over the initial shock and kissed him back. It was simple, chaste, and so much better than your ex had been.

You broke the awkward silence with a nervous laugh.

"I wasn't really expecting that," you admitted.

"Neither was I."

Silence settled back in, but it was more comfortable this time. Matthew cleared his throat.

"You know, I can be a much better boyfriend than that guy," he mumbled. You smiled your radiant smile for him once again, leaning back in.

"I know."
