Description Just to prove I do occasionally do more serous things than play with dolls...

Here is the needle felted appy horse I made for Fran for Yule. She stands about seven inches high at the ears, breyer classic for those familiar with that brand. Her name is Leah.

She took a long while to make. The armature was good solid wire, with the needlefelting round the outside, hooves are made of milliput. All the markings are felted on apart from her hooves and her eyes.

OH I have a set of antique Breyers that used to be my dad's! I love them...sigh....
But, Do you know if raw wool is available at Hobbylobby or Michael's, or some other store? I really would like to avoid ordering online if possible, and I've been wanting to try needle felting for quite some time now.

I should think so - I'm based in the UK but our hobby lobby equivalent is called 'hobbycraft' and they carry it. Best bet is go in and ask, say it's for needlefelting so you need wool tops rather than spun wool balls. Good luck! LMK if you get some. Yay for the breyers, everyone should have breyers

Thanks! ;D
I went to Hobby Lobby just today and got some, it's more expensive than I'd wish for and I forgot to get a coupon. But I've been wanting to try this out so long I got it anyway ;D

I must ask, did you just felt the mane in or did you do something else?? This is amazing by the way!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Okarnillart In reply to ohmyhii [2013-04-07 14:11:39 +0000 UTC]

Yup the mane is felted in, I have a history of hairing model horses so the technique was the same, take a hank of raw wool, brush it out so you have straight fibres, trim one end so it is straight (in models we'd then glue this) lay it against the neck and felt it in

This is beautiful! I've never seen such a realistic felted horse before! I love the realistic roan look. The size of a Breyer classic? That's a lot of felting!

Okarnillart In reply to Lupineleigh [2012-02-15 10:16:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank you I do regular sculpture and customising breyers so I'm kinda used to conformation. Yup she's classic size, sort of longer than they are tho. The roaning is just from mixing the brown and white wool and felting the result onto her, takes a while and I had lots of reference pics up on the computer at the time.

aw I'm so glad! and thank you.

Best tip I can pass on is get the finest needles you can - I import mine from the U.S - and whenever you first think you've finished... you haven't - felt on!

Good luck and I'd love to see your felting when it's done.

What sort of wool do you use? My friend has sheep and usually ends up with a lot of fleeces. Would that work, or is there a particular type you use? *is a n00b*

These are the sorts of things I've done before. These are sewn though, not felted.

I am SOOOO sorry - took me ages to find this, I have just worked my way through something like 3000 messages and only just found it. your horses are CUTE!! Do you make them to sell?

The wool I use is merino, it's about the finest you can get, very soft and silky and packs down beautifully. I buy it from ebay.

You can use any kind of wool tho, the coarser fibres give a more coarse finish, but for some projects that works really well (native manes for instance)it just depends on what scale you're working. The coarse wool I used to start with was much better after a good wet felting session (rub it between two layers of clingfilm with soap and water) The merino I use when I want a smoother finer finish.

Hope helps and truly sorry again
