Description Balearica regulorum

BirdiesIn this penultimate Journal about my Tanzanian Safari, I am returning to the avian world with some more images of birds - the big, the small, and the fancy.
You cannot go very far in the wild in Southern and Eastern Africa without coming across the largest of living birds - the ostrich (Struthio camelus). These guys are big at about 100 kg and standing 2 - 3 metres tall. Perhaps not surprisingly, ostriches are flightless birds, but they can run at an extraordinary speed of up to 40 mph (70 kph). The males in particular can be very aggressive if challenged or threatened, and can kill with powerful kicks, the claws on their feet being long and sharp. Beware any male ostrich whose legs are red, as this signifies he is on the look out for a bit of houghmagandie with a female (ostrich that is) and is in no mood to pass the time of day with anything else. So, next time you see a passing ostrich, check the legs! Male ostriches are a bit larger than the females with black body feathers, and th

"The Birdman" had a show at the Virginia State Fair with one of these birds trained to fly to a platform and then back to him. Beautiful image.

Thank you, Robert. Yes, female crowned cranes can become bonded to human males, as we discovered a year or so ago when we visited a crane sanctuary in the Drakensbergs, SA. They become quite biddable and are happy to "perform" for food. Woe betide any human female who tries to intervene, as female crowned cranes are very aggressive towards human females.Β

Stunning specimen and plumage!Β Β

It always fascinates me how animals, living in the wild, always manage toΒ stay lookingΒ so clean all the time, and pretty. !

Another very good point about staying clean in the wild, Linda. It is yet another evolutionary factor - stay clean and look frosty all the time then you are seen as a healthy mate. If an animal becomes ill then it doesn't look so good. Β Birds preen, most animals lick, higher primates groom each other...all to do with survival via attracting a mate.

It's still amazing that just with licking/preening, etc; they can look so pristine!Β  If I had only to take a bird bath (so to speak) I'd start looking beat real fast.
Anyway, just thinking out loud here...nature is amazing!

I suppose that when we see the "finished product" of a crowned crane looking good, another crowned crane might not think the same as we do. "OOOh, here comes Maise. She can never keep that crown under control. How she'll find a mate is beyond me!"

As I recall from last year when I saw them close up on a special reserve for them, standing upright they would be about 1 meter tall, perhaps a tad more.
