Description Dream SmoothingMy cameras, lenses and ancillary equipment are all still in storage in Scotland, pending our move to the new home, sometime in March or April perhaps. Meanwhile, I continue my updates and explorations of editing software, particularly The Gimp, https://www.gimp.org/, along with the very powerful add-on known as the G'MIC filter suite, https://gmic.eu/. Taken together, the Gimp and G'MIC provide an enormous image editing resource and all of it free. In this feature, I am going to explore one filter found in G'MIC called Dream Smoothing. If you have the G'MIC add-on installed on the Gimp, Dream Smoothing is found in the Artistic sub category. It is said by the Gimp and G'MIC community to be a popular filter and has been included in the suite since about 2014. As with so many of G'MIC filters detailed information of how to use it is sparse, but in the following examples I have used the filter mainly with its default settings. The one parameter that I have varied is called "itera

This one is my favourite, David ~ a lovely painterly effect! I love to occasionally use these effects in Photoshop, e.g. below! Cheers, Coco

Thank you very much, Coco. Regarding your shot, I am a fan of Topaz filters as well and in this particular scene the effect works well. I haven't had as many comments as I would have liked about the filter effect that I used, one that I feel does impart a painterly feel but not OTT. My friend Alive AlicesPlace did make what a I think is a very important point: a painterly feel gives extra appeal to hang the image on a wall. I think that this is what I'm looking for at the moment - some effect that would make me print off hard copies for display outside of the web. I shall contunue my explorations.

Cheers

David

Yes, I agree with you David ~ somehow photographs as artwork on a wall always seem to look like posters, whereas adding filters make the work look like a painting and much more suitable for hanging on walls. Coco

You know, in my parents house they have a number of paintings by a local artist of rural scenes in their neighbourhood. Watercolours, they are as accurate as they can be, but not quite, because of the painters' own "balancing" of the composition.
I'm the same, I hang pictures of familiar places/people, not arty abstracts, portraits of strangers or unknown pretty landscapes.
Photography with this filter in a painting style keeps the subject "honest" and therefore meaningful to folks like us....but with a twist.

There's probably an endless market for this kind of thing, from peoples "forever homes" to grandchildren, classic vehicles and pets. Even action shots of a beloved show jumping pony or race car in a rally and the like...so long as the shot is "right" in the first place, the rest is in your creative hands.

I'm interested to see where you go with this David.
This time next year you could be a millionaire.....

The "would you hang it on your wall" criterion in art works is an important one, Alice, as you have identified. I think adding that twist, as you say, can make a photograph have that wall hanging appeal. I would also distinguish this from the "wow factor" phenomenon. Wow factors tend not to be enduring.

As to being a millionaire next year, I'm more likely to be dead broke from restoring out forever home!

Many Thanks

David
