Nice capture!Β Just because she is a female, Nature did not provide her with horns for defense!Β Unfair!Β So she relies on her speed to flee!!!!!! Β

Okavanga In reply to fotoponono [2018-10-08 07:38:04 +0000 UTC]
Good point, Henry. Why no horns on the females? Presumably, in evolutionary terms, they did not confer any advantage. Males have horns to spar with other males, but they are of no use against a predator.

So true!Β Maybe the female one would not be so beautiful with horns.Β And I notice that the word "beautiful" is mostly associated with 'females' in most species - except and not limited to a "peacock"!Β My silly observation and I am not complaining.Β We 'men' are 'beautiful' as we are!Β Don't you think so, David?Β Β Β Β Β
Cheers!

Absolutely, Henry - it is just we don't use the word beautiful, rather handsome, rugged, mature!

This is such a beautiful, soft photo. She appears to be alert, and yet you have captured the essence of innocence.

Okavanga In reply to MYPeanutGallery [2018-10-08 07:36:08 +0000 UTC]
Thank you, Penny. Alertness is a key to survival and impala are individually skilled at detecting sights and sounds and smells that we would miss. But, as a group - a female harem of the local male -they are even better as any one suspicion gets transmitted to the whole herd by way of body language and sound.

Thank you, Lucy. She is very beautiful to our eyes. As a young female, she is in very good condition - all the impala we saw were in tip-top shape. Good grass.

You hit the nail on the head again, Mayumi. The whole body of this and other antelope species has evolved to provide a streamlined shape capable of very swift movement.
Many thanks
