Description A while ago, I wrote a Journal about wild walking around Loch Dee in the hills not that far from my cottage ==>Β Wild Walking . The tracks in this area also allow access to one of the more well known areas here - Glen Trool and its associated mountains. We took a walk in August along the track and over the hills to get to Loch Trool, and then back - some 20 kms. The weather was fantastic and the heather was in magnificent bloom. Here are a few shots from that walk.

This is country that you would love, Sheri. The heather this year was particularly good.

Many Thanks

I can see that the Heather was most abundant for you this season. It really is a hearty plant and seen though out Britain, Scotland and Ireland. Being amen lsland, the moisture off the ocean has to help in this process.

Heather is also an essential food for many of our ground dwelling birds such as grouse and pheasants. So, there should be a lot more of those around next Spring.

Many Thanks, Sheri.

Thankee kindly, Katey. We don't have vultures here, but there were buzzards up that day, and you get occasional red kites here as well - they are carrion eaters.

Cheers

Your welcome buzzards and kites are pretty cool birds! I know there's vultures in Europe, but I guess it depends what area of Europe your in.

Β  Β  Speaking of saving vultures

I really hope diclofenac gets banned in Europe.
It's really scary they allow it considering it has pretty much wiped out India's population of vultures.

The thing is scientists have cautioned people against using it.Yet people are using it knowing that vultures there are in trouble. They are fully aware what happened over in India. Diclofenac can kill a vulture in 3 days it causes renal kidney failure.

This drug is an anti inflammatory drug primarily used in cattle.
There are safer alternatives out there to use.Safer both for live stock and the vultures that feed on the deceased animals.

Haha sorry about that, once I start think about it I can't help but mention it - guess that's just the conservationist in me

Interesting aspect of diclofenac that I did not know about. I use it occasionally as an anti-inflammatory, but I didn't know it was used in cattle. I hope it does not affect red kites as they will sometimes come across a dead cow. But, normally in the UK all cattle and sheep that die in the open will be collected by the farmers.

Cheers

I know it affects eagles as well, but I'm not sure the affect it may have on kites. Ya most farmers are pretty good about removing the deceased animals.

I've had a quick look on Google, but there is no mention of kites. I shall look further.
