Description The Last HurrahI've come to the end of my tour around Norfolk and wanted to finish this set of Journals with a few odds and ends. First, I wish to thank Alice, AlicesPlace for all the help and suggestions she gave me before we visited Norfolk, and for all the support by way of favourites and comments on the images and Journals. There was one suggestion that she made about the woods at Holkham, a village associated with a mighty Stately Home, Holkham Hall, near to Wells-Next-the-Sea in North Norfolk. Alice stated that there were some very odd trees in a wood near the beach at Holkam, the like of which she had never seen anywhere else. Well, that sort of comment is the proverbial red rag to the bull, so off I went to see these curious trees. Curious indeed, as the two examples here show. The woodland is mainly fir with some deciduous trees, but these two (and many more) don't look like any ordinary fir tree with these major branches that turn into subsidiary trunks.

Wow these really are odd trees. I wonder what caused them to grow in such a way. Great capture!

Indeed, Rachel,  but I have so far failed to make an absolute identification let alone finding out why they grow like that.

Many Thanks

David

I'd speculate maybe an odd weather phenomenon in their past. Perhaps strong winds or maybe heavy snow that held them at odd angles for a period of time?

You're very welcome David

Maybe you are correct, Rachel, that weather has played a part, although I have seen another species in the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus that grow like this. But they do not grow anywhere else.

Puzzler.

It reminds me of a soprano singing the last notes from an opera.

That is an analogy that would not have occurred to me, Mayumi - I thought more of bull's horns, but yours is much more inventive.

Many Thanks

Each one has such character. What made them grow that way I wonder??!

If you walked far enough you may have run into this one. I hope it's still there...It was huge and easy to walk underneath....

Walking was a problem that day, Alice - one reason why I didn't carry out a thorough investigation. I had and still have a problem with the tendons in the lower legs ankles and feet, and could barely walk at all that day. Also, with others in the party it was difficult to wander around. But, we managed to come from the seaward side through the wood to the path that runs to Wells. I would have liked to have walked laterally back to the car park near the beach, but just couldn't manage it. I needed to find good cones and needles which I could have used for identification. Next time, maybe.

Many Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear you had some pain and difficuty that day. I hope it didn't spoil your enjoyment too much and a hop flavoured libation made up for it later.
If you find out which variety of Pine they are, I would love to know.

Just been to my local "footman" to get a custom set of "orthotics" to help corect leg and ankle problems. Hopefully wearing such will get rid of the problem. I shall endevour to find out more about the pines.

Cheers
