Description Photographed near Morsten, Blakeney, Norfolk.

Blakeney Birds - RaptorsBlakeney is a small coastal town on the north coast of Norfolk in East Anglia. It is a popular destination for the boating community, and for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts. The coast for many a mile on either side comprises long stretches of fresh water marsh lands, recovered grazing land and tall reed beds, all separated from the North Sea by a huge shingle bank. The area is a haven for wild birds, gulls and pigeons being the most vociferous and numerous. However, there are some birds of prey - raptors, particularly buzzards (buteo buteo); kestrels (falco tinnunculus) https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/bird-and-wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/k/kestrel/;
and the very scarce marsh harrier (circus aeruginosis) https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/bird-and-wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/m/marshharrier/.
During my recent vacation there, I managed some lucky shots of both kestrels and the marsh harrier. Regarding the latter, there was a nest where a male and female were rearing a

Wonderful capture! You've got great focus on this lovely kestrel, nice and sharp to take in all the details.
Looks like this one has spotted something to hunt judging by the gaze there. Did you get to see any successful hunts from the birds of prey you found?

I thought this the better of the two shots I've presented in that the bird is obviously (to me) looking at potential prey. As for the hunt - yes, this one dropped a few seconds later and got a mouse. Unfortunately, I was not well placed to snap it, and the bird flew off with the mouse dangling from the talons. I got a couple of shots, but too blurred to present. This was taken with the 50-200 mm zoom for the EOS M5, not my normal lens. The EOS M5 just doesn't have the speed of focus nor the tracking ability of the %D, but not too bad here.

Cheers

David

Kestrels are much faster than moorhens haha. Quite the challenge to capture the hunt in progress but it's definitely a spectacle to watch. Seems that lens s great with more stilled scenes though.
Good to hear these raptors had some success Hopefully next time you'll have better luck trying to catch the action!

That part of the world is rich in buzzards, kestrels and marsh harriers, so I guess they do have rich pickings.

Many thanks for all your helpful comments, Rachel.

Not if you were the field mouse that was about to be predated, Sheri - these guys are ruthless killers.

Many Thanks

Yes, they are amazing hunters...pity for the poor field mouse that catches her eye.
