Description Norfolk LandscapesOne of the characteristic features of the Norfolk landscape, and indeed of most of East Anglia, is the general flatness of the landscape. The underlying geology is such that there are flat beds of rock that slop from West downwards to the East and soil has accumulated on top of those rocks through the millenia. There are some hills that are the result of glacial action depositing debris after the end of the last Ice Age, with some unique features known as eskers (lovely word) that are deposits of sand and gravel once upon a time acting as sand bars under the sea. These ridges can be seen standing proud of the generally rolling, undulating Norfolk plains. Over time, the landscape has been mightily modified by Man, but the general patchwork of fields, farms, and country estates found today arose in Medieval times. Here are some straightforward landscape shots from around the Blakeney area. Blakeney Marshes and coastal landscapes will be in a subsequent feature.

That is a fine capture. Beautifully framed. And the clouds were perfect that day giving it a painterly feel.  Love this!

I thought this one of the best I took on that holiday and I'm pleased that a couple or so people have noted it as good, Linda. That was such a beautiful early morning.

Many thanks, Linda.

What a view and what a shot, David!  And thanks for the geology lesson; it's strange but wonderful to hear someone other than a Canadian talking about glacial deposits and the Ice Age.  This view actually reminds me of the flat farmlands of Southern Ontario, but we have a stretch up Highway 18, one of the loveliest stretches we drive on our way to the Bruce Peninsula, which reminds me of the patchwork-quilt look of some places in England, to be sure; and which remind me of the Strawbs song "A Glimpse of Heaven."

I had wanted to capture some typical Norfolk landscapes, and this just jumped out at me when I was exploring the esker early one morning. There is even a faint mist in the distance! Yes, geology, ice ages, eskers, moraines, you name we have it over here, but often buried or ignored. This esker is, apparently, the most complete in Norfolk, and in recent times has a curious piece of history. Because it comprises mainly sand and gravel left as a huge deposit, a large chunk was dug out during WWII to furnish filling for the concrete roads and runways  for the myriad of airfields that were built in this part of the country. Not 5 miles from this very spot is the famous but now largely forgotten airbase at Langham, some of the roads of which still exist.

Glad you like the shot, Brett. Many Thanks

David

Norfolk is a county with big skies - as there are no high hills to get in the road.

Many Thanks, Mayumi.

Great!  And getting out of bed at that time, is not that comfortable.  One has to have a strong desire to 'drag' one out of that bed - especially when winter is around!

Cheers
