Description Young spotted hyena at the den.

Hi! Ena.Hi Guys - there's no nice way of saying this, but you might want to ensure your womenfolk don't read this feature - no, siree! I've got some very painful, distressing and disturbing things to tell you about hyenas, things that will make you wince, make your eyes water, and cause constrictions in the nether regions. So, gird your loins, preferably with some armour plating, lock the doors, and check no predatory females are withing range. This is OUCH time.
I'm talking here about the spotted (or laughing) hyena (Crocuta crocuta) the most common of the African hyena, and the sole member of its mammalian class. Some people think hyenas are part of the canine family, that is dogs, and indeed, they do look a bit dog-like. But, they are not, they are a unique animal, with some behavioral traits associated with canines, some with felines, and some unique. Fully grown hyena are fairly hefty, up to 5 feet in length, 3 feet high, and weighing 50-60 kilograms. They are ferocious, highly intelligen

Excellent.
Of course it's a Spotted Hyena, David - we wouldn't be seeing it if you had not spotted it.

A great capture of the coat! Very nice coat, too. (although how they bear it in that heat! )

I reckon this one is maybe about 1 year old, and has its full spotted coat, along with the start of that lean and hungry look, Linda. The heat can be bad during the day, but these guys will hole up somewhere, even in a muddy pool. During the night though, the temperature plummets and you need that coat for sure.

Just how cold does it get? You have me very curious now.

In this part of the world, in winter at night following a clear sky the previous day, then the temperature will be down to 3-5 degrees in open spaces, a bit more in dense bush. In summer it will be a lot warmer - comfortable temperatures, but often unbearably hot (for us humans) during the day.
