Description Five standing soldiers,
side by side.
'Sound off!' Called the Captain.
'1' '2' '3' '4' '5'

But then they went to battle,
the young soldiers cried.
Four standing soldiers,
side by side.

Four standing soldiers,
posted by the door.
'Sound off!' Called the Captain.
'1' '2' '3' '4'

But then they went to battle,
the young soldiers cried.
Three standing soldiers,
side by side.

Three standing soldiers,
stationed by the sea.
'Sound off!' Called the Captain.
'1' '2' '3'

But then they went to battle,
the young soldiers cried.
Two standing soldiers,
side by side.

Two standing soldiers,
training strong and true.
'Sound off!' Called the Captain.
'1' '2'

But then they went to battle,
the young soldier cried.
Just a single soldier,
no one at his side.

One standing soldier,
waiting in the sun.
'Sound off!' Called the Captain.
'...1'

The Captain's eyes flew open wide,
his gaze a heavy weight.
'That cannot be son, what's going on?
What is your comrades fate?'

' Every battle, we have lost one,
from our teams original five.
No longer are they here with me,
standing side by side.'

A deep sigh filled the air,
the Captain's good mood done.
For, once, he'd had a strong team of five.
It had reduced to one.

And then the soldier went to battle,
no one at his side.
When he had been shipped off home,
the tired old Captain cried.
