Well you could try. I think with Patreon, you have a chance to build a good fanbase.
I'm not an artist, more of a writer, but I have a dream, to make a manga project of mine called HEART OF WILDFIRE. Right now, I made a Indiegogo campaign to finance it. So far, here's what I've got to make the first issue happen: www.indiegogo.com/projects/hea… If you ever want to contribute something or even share this with your friends, be my guest. There are only a few days left.
We also plan of selling the first issue on independent platforms such as Comixology, Amazon, etc. I'd like to use the profits gained to reinvest into the project. I think it will be a while before I can make H.O.W. auto-finance itself, but I'm confident.
I think you should go for it. Start small, step by step, etc. After all, you are your own boss, so therefore make the right decisions for yourself.
