Description Is anyone else dying to see this movie? After reading more than one review that indicates that not only is this movie enjoyable and beautiful -- more importantly, it's apparently clean. The costumes look excellent from the images I've seen so far, and I'm hoping the music is good (and period-esque enough) to justify purchasing a soundtrack.

Hence my sudden urge to plaster the promotional images (in this case, Abbie Cornish clad in a lovely pink as John Keats' real-life love interest Fanny Brawne) across my desktop...LOL! So I thought I'd share with everyone else, just in case there exists another hopeful desirous of becoming a fan! (Fingers crossed that it'll be better than the last Regency biopic travesty...coughBecomingJanecough...)

Oh, and the "fitting quote du jour" for this WP also happens to be the source of the film's title.

Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou art--
Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night
And watching, with eternal lids apart,
Like nature's patient, sleepless Eremite,
The moving waters at their priestlike task
Of pure ablution round earth's human shores,
Or gazing on the new soft-fallen mask
Of snow upon the mountains and the moors--
No--yet still stedfast, still unchangeable,
Pillow'd upon my fair love's ripening breast,
To feel for ever its soft fall and swell,
Awake for ever in a sweet unrest,
Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath,
And so live ever--or else swoon to death.

I really like this wallpaper - it's so simple and beautiful. In fact, I love all of your artwork. I definitely think you should watch Bright Star, if you haven't done so already - it was a lovely film, with a good dollop of Keats' poetry (always a good thing ). Although, I wasn't too sure about the costumes - some were nice, but a couple were somewhat... questionable... In my opinion. And my friend and her mother agreed - and they are both very well informed when it comes to nice - or not - period costumes. But I did like the film, and it did inspire me to read through and take in the entire Wikipedia article about Fanny Brawne - which was very interesting...

Thanks so much!

I have seen Bright Star by now; and was given it as a gift by a friend, so I own it!

I loved the costumes, and felt it suited Fanny Brawne very well. (BTW, I'd be very very wary of anything Wikipedia says; they've been known to make mincemeat out of more than one historical issue/person!! I'd advise getting a real, bona-fide biography on her if you're truly interested.)

You're welcome
I am usually wary of Wikipedia, but I think the article on Wiki seemed fairly reliable: good spelling, punctuation and grammar (if I remember correctly), long, articulate and seemingly well-informed and non-biased. But Perhaps I am being too trustworthy... I am glad you liked the film (although you didn't say you did directly, you didn't say you hated it so I will make a presumption ). Thank you for your reply .

I'm always wary of Wikipedia! I guess I've read too many articles where I caught either careless or intentional errors.

I did like the film! Very gorgeous, well-acted, and a joy to look at. I've been thinking about watching it a second time, to better appreciate it.

There are few worse things than bad spelling, punctuation and grammar! I am glad you liked the film - I enjoyed it too. Have fun re-watching it .

oh my god, I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who thought "Becoming Jane" was a bit limpy if not completely lame. *heavy sigh* But "Bright Star" was GORGEOUS and so tastefully done. I am in love with all of your wallpapers, I have no idea how I will possibly stay with one for more than a day without wanting to try another!

You're exactly right--Bright Star was a biopic done RIGHT and Becoming Jane was a biopic done wrong...

Thank you for your kind words!

*gasps into gloved hand* I only just saw the preview for this film yesterday! I had the same first impression: "It has potential, but they probably turned it into a bodice heaving fest. " I'm very happy to be proven wrong! Now I really want to see it!

Me too me too me too!!!! (Duh, hah hah) I'm not sure if it's a good or a bad thing that it's not showing in a local theater...probably the latter, as otherwise I'd be sorely tempted to gallop off and see it! Something tells me this might be a better film to experience in the privacy of one's home (i.e. where you can sniffle and cry and crumple lace-edged hankies freely and without embarassment!)!

I know! Oh, the temptation! That's why I've been to the movie theatre only once. (I say movie theatre because I go to plays and performances.) I make girlish noises of gleeful appreciation. I like to clutch objects and dab my eyes and I don't want to do that with a crowd of strangers.

What was the only movie you saw, then? I don't go very often (too frickin' exPENsive!!) but the last few times I've enjoyed it very much, boy movies though they be... I clutch things too, btw...as in the case of The Dark Knight, I think I gripped my seat's armrests until my hands were stiff! LOL! (And as for not wanting to do that with strangers, I was very glad I was the only person in the room whilst watching/crying/sniffling over Cranford...oh, my...!)

Ah, I must correct myself. I remember I've been twice, now. Once for High School Musical 3 (my grandparents surprised us) and the last time for Star Trek. I must say, I L-O-V-E-D seeing Star Trek in theatres. 8-D I'm a certified geek. We watched it again on DVD, but the graphics were just incredible on that ginormous screen. The indecent scenes made me mad because they were not only indecent, but random and unecessary, but other than that I had a fantastic time! My best friend took me and I was on an emotional high for the rest of the day. We talked and giggled a lot through the whole thing, but we were in the back and hardly anyone else was there, so it wasn't a big deal.

OooooOOOOOOooooooooohhh, good thinking!

Usually I never want to see any movies (or only a very small few), and even less in theaters. (Some that I want to see, I do NOT want to pay $10.50 for!!) But lately there have been lots of "guy" movies that I'm interested in seeing...which is rather odd, actually...

It's a Regency-era biopic about the poet John Keats, and his (real life) romance with Fanny Brawne. Here are a few related links for you:

It looks interesting... But I haven't sen anything for it.... I looked at the release date for it in the U.S. on IMDB and it said September 18th(limited), maybe thats why I haven't seen anything for it. Its probably not in our theatre....

It would be a waste of time. If it was playing in my area I would have to go see it with the familly or a sister or something, I don't it the type of movie they would want to see in the theatre. I will have to tell my mom to put it in the list of movies to rent we already have a lot!

Yes, I'm dying to see it too! The photos looks gorgeous, the music is lovely...
I absolutely love John Keats and his poetry. And the story of his love to Fanny is so sad, so moving...
I think this movie will make me cry buckets...

olde-fashioned In reply to Arlenka [2009-11-24 04:45:22 +0000 UTC]

I haven't heard any of the music yet! Is it on YouTube yet, do you know?

Poetry has never been my thing, but I've been trying to keep an open mind about the good ones, LOL. Lately I've read a bit of Keats, and I really like what I've come across so far! (I loved that bit of Cowper that's on the S&S WP I just posted, too.)

Perhaps it would be a good idea to bring a box of kleenex, eh? LOL! I fully expect it to be sad -- how much it will move me, however, remains to be seen. (I usually almost-cry in the '95 S&S, teared up in Gladiator, and cried like a baby in Cranford!)

You can find the soundtrack here ... and here .
I love "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" read by Ben Wishaw...

Oh dear, I cried in Cranford too! To tell the truth I cry at movies too easily... So I guess a box of kleenex will be very useful!

Hee hee, after getting your comment I skedattled on over to YT and found them myself! Thank you ever so much for the links too btw!

I think Abbie Cornish (presumably?) reading "Bright Star" whilst sniffling is very indicative of what the movie is going to be like!!

Alene [2009-11-23 06:06:27 +0000 UTC]

There was just a 'filming of' shown on tv here. It looked very dreamy, but that may just have been the fault of the soundtrack that was plastered over the entire half hour.
I can't say I'm dying to see it, but that's only because it sounds sad, and I like my happy endings. I am a shallow person. But you're right, the costumes and everything look quite lovely. As does this wallpaper.

olde-fashioned In reply to Alene [2009-11-23 07:54:28 +0000 UTC]

Ah, thank you!

It has been largely ignored as far as the mainstream goes, and including by myself because I presumed Yet Another Period Biopic/Romance = Naughty Scenes. Happily did I learn my error and learn to eagerly anticipate the DVD release! I've been fiddling around with the promos a lot recently...I hope no one minds seeing cousins of this in the near future...

As for it being sad, of course it will be, but I'm the type of hopeless romantic that often finds sad romances infinitely more poignant and moving than happily-ever-after ones...not that I don't enjoy those, mind!

Alene In reply to olde-fashioned [2009-11-27 04:37:36 +0000 UTC]

They've just started advertising it here - I saw it in the paper yesterday. We got a bit confused with the 'making of' show, because we hadn't actually heard of what they were supposed to be making.

I like happy endings. This is possibly the result of watching too many old musicals - a sad ending is a shock!
