Description
Maki Hakuno (珀摛 巻, Hakuno Maki), born Mae Himura (斐邨 前, Himura Mae) is a scholar who travels around Japan. She helps in rebuilding villages which were torn down by the war through teachings in search of salvation.
-Background-
Mae, along with her sisters were born as a part of a deal between a demon who wishes to continue her clan's lineage and a samurai lord who seeks protection for his land.
She spent most of her childhood happily, sharing a close relationship with her family. She enjoyed reading books in her free time, along the way becoming accuanted with a boy named Haruto Shima.
She remained oblivious to her demonic origin until when she stumbled into a room one night where she saw her mother and sisters devouring a traveler before her sister herself decided to offer her a piece of flesh, which the horrified Mae declined, frustrating her sister to the brink of trying to force-feed her with it, traumatizing her.
From then on, Mae grew distant and hateful towards her family. She started to let the unexpecting visitors go with the excuse of her not wanting a visitor, which only lasted for a short while as her mother and sister soon take notice and threatened her life.
As time passed, the number of missing travellers and villagers grew. Not wanting to loose more of her people, the frustrated Mae told Haruto the truth of the matter, preparing to take down her own family's rule trough rebellion. When the rebellion finally took place however, Mae herself was taken down to be executed along with her family, only to later be intercepted by Haruto himself.
The angered villagers reluctantly let Mae live as she had not killed a person with her own hands but still exiled her as she still shared the blood of the demon who killed them and stayed silent despite knowing the truth just to keep herself alive. Mae trust Haruto with the responsibilty of leading the village before leaving.
Left with nothing, Mae wandered around aimlessly until she was found by a Chinese scholar. Althought he first intended of selling her, he eventually warmed up to her, taking her as an apprentice even after she told him abouth her past. He later took her back to China, where she met his son, Jia, a merchant, who she would marry soon after.
Mae and her husband would continue to travel around China, with Mae teaching people as Jia was doing his trading bussiness until Jia finally reached old age. Some time during this, they accuired a magical box. After her husband's passing, Mae went back to Japan under the name Maki Hakuno, hoping that her teachings would bring salvation and peace to her.
-Personality-
Coming from a noble family, Maki presents herself in a calm and polite demenour, and mostly in a rather mysterious vibe. She does break this act from time to time, mostly when she is angered. A trigger for her anger and disgust are usually cases similar to that of her parents, where people would sacrifice anything to the demons for their own desire.
She doesn't consider, "Sacrifice for the greater good" immoral and must be prevented at all cost. No matter how few is sacrificed, she would rather work the hard way around it, through development in technology and knowledge. She considers people moving to the shortcut of making deals with demons as brainless and does not have the right to live.
Another time she breaks her character is when she had found something that interested her. She would display a quite playful and childlike personality, spending a lot of time obeserving whatever catches her eye.
As much as she is content with her life now, she could still question her own humanity from time to time, and still feels guilty over her family's doing.
-Relationships-
Jia Zhang
Maki's husband. Maki loved her husband dearly and is grateful that he is willing to accept her past and heritage. She stayed by his side until his death, willingly letting go of her own desire until then. The only thing she regretted from their marriage is not being able to grow old together and not having children (Maki does not want to risk her demonic blood to taint the humanity of her own children).
Kyoumaru
A forest spirit in a form of a horse who decided to aid Maki in her journey throughout Japan, in return of Maki helping him when he was injured. Although he can be sarcastic and annoying at times, Kyoumaru keeps Maki from loosing her temper by reminding her of what she was there for.
Dororo
Maki met Dororo while she was visiting Daigo's land. She became intrigued by Dororo when she realized that the child was stalking her in suspicion that she is another demon wanting to take advantage of the land's people. After revealing the truth, the two aqquainted well with each other, with Dororo telling stories of her journey with Hyakkimaru. Maki also taught Dororo the basics of reading, hoping that it would at least help her sometime in the future.
Hyakkimaru
Maki had only heard of Hyakkimaru through stories told by the people of Daigo's land and Dororo, but she considers the later to be much more believeable. She considers his fate is similar to hers if not worse, and wished that she had came to Daigo's land before Hyakkimaru's birth to undo his unfortunate fate.
