Description Japanese Fairy with Yokobue Flute

Faeries are so popular nowadays, they're practically everywhere. But I noticed that they all look more or less the same, employing the same basic concept and nationality. What would its Japanese brethren look like, I wondered? And what if for once it wasn't a girl?
Thus I was inspired with the idea for this image. ^_^

Thank you GermanCityGirl and cosmosue for the Daily Deviation feature! And thank you all for your wonderful comments.

I'll try to reply to each one as time permits, and here are some answers to the recurrent questions: This image was drawn & inked on paper, then colored in Photoshop. The paper texture was created in PS as well. The whole thing took about a week because I was in a rush for an art show. Usually I like to take my sweet time. LOL

Thanks cousins!

Ooooh! I'm slowly working my way up to writing a novel featuring fairies (which will, in part, be an answer to all the annoying books featuring fairies I've read over the years), and this is *precisely* the kind of thing I've needed in terms of getting my head in the right place. Wonderful! The colors are gorgeous, too, and the clothes are eye-popping.

Ooooh! Novel about fairies, you say. That won't be anything like the current stale representation, you say. Mmmm! I can't wait.

Like with the elves, I llllooove the concept of fae but am bored to tears by 99% of the content featuring them these days. I know there are no truly new ideas and everything's been done, but c'mon, we can mix it up a little.

Yes, really! I mean, obviously there are all kinds of people who like the old-fashioned stories about faeries, but they really don't have a lot of room for people like me in them, and I'm sick to death of that in genre fiction. There are queer Black women in the world, writers! I know! I'm one of them! Anyway.

I would totally volunteer to be a sounding board for that. I mean, modern faeries! Just the thought of it makes me tingle with curiosity. I wish you best of luck with the story. Wreck some chaos in the genre fiction! \^_^/

Really balanced drawing!
I especially like the way you did the flowers and the nice background.
The details from the person are incredible!
Could be in an Anime.

What I don't like is the thin bough; Nobody would be able to sit on this without breaking down.^^

But devoid of this, the 'fantasy' is missing and I think this was your clue. (If so, please let me know )

Not even a fairy? What do fairies weigh, anyway? Until I find a conversion chart, anything goes.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by that. What would make this a truly "fantasy" piece?

it sucks.............

naw im joking, its great. im so glad it doesn't have wings and all the other typical fairy traits. although i think you could have made it more mythical or magical. it kinda looks like a regular person more than a fairy. but i dunno, im not an expert.

OlgaUlanova In reply to zuzu08 [2008-09-14 05:10:43 +0000 UTC]

I do like wings, just not everywhere all the time. ^_^ Well, what would you suggest for a more magical feel? (sparkles? ) I'm always open to suggestions.

zuzu08 In reply to OlgaUlanova [2008-09-14 22:35:55 +0000 UTC]

gosh i don't know im not the artist lol. but i suppose if you changed the facial features a bit, like making the face longer or the eyes a bit more narrow, something like that. and yes sparkles would be fantastic! jk, jk

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OlgaUlanova In reply to zuzu08 [2008-09-14 22:48:34 +0000 UTC]

it doesn't take an artist to know what you like. Especially because people have very different ideas about what makes something work, or in our case, what would make a figure appear more magical.

I see what you're saying about elongating the features, what does that mean to you though? To me it would make the fairy look more western-like, with the traditional long and slim pixie face, slanted eyes. Since the whole point of this piece was to try for an asian feel, would the exaggeration have to be reversed, making the features more round?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zuzu08 In reply to OlgaUlanova [2008-09-14 22:59:32 +0000 UTC]

i kinda said that half jokingly and because usually artists would have more experience and therefore more valualbe advice, but you are right.

as for the elongated features, maybe you could keep the roundness of the face but make the chin more pointy, that way it won't look more western. or maybe you could change the skin color/texture and maybe add some oriental tattoos. that way maybe you won't lose the asian feel that you are trying to make for the picture. im not too sure, because to me the picture looks great but it doesn't really look nor feel like a fairy. maybe you should add horns lol.

I've got a large collection of whistles and flutes from around the world, and although I've got a Chinese dzi and an Indian flute, a pungi and several other Asian instruments, I haven't got a flute from Japan yet.

OlgaUlanova In reply to carolin54323 [2008-02-13 18:05:14 +0000 UTC]

wow, that sounds amazing! What does the Indian flute look like? (After Japan, Indian culture is my favorite. ^_^)

You could even do a series of photographs, of all the different wind instruments you have! That'd be quite something to see. ^__^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

carolin54323 In reply to OlgaUlanova [2008-03-29 16:59:20 +0000 UTC]

The Indian flute is made of wood, and has seven holes, not the most ornate instrument, but the ends are bound with coloured thread. I have a an Indian whistle too and that is painted with pretty designs. I draw rather than photograph and I might just do a still life of a collection of my instruments. I'm not going to draw all 37 instruments in my collection, but I will draw a lot of them.

I'm not sure whether to draw them as a still life in their own right, or as props in a more ambitious painting, or whether to draw them as a still life first, and then include instruments in a later painting.
