Description

Another P-51 Illustration, this time of s/n 44-14328 of the 384th FS, 364th FG - flown by 2/Lt. Cidney B. Fairrington.

As you might have guessed, this one also crashed near where I live - namely near Frauensee on the 21st November 1944. This one is of special importance to me, as my Great-Grandma actually witnessed the crash and everything that followed back then.

Lt. Fairrington had also strafed an airfield, where his Mustang received an AA hit in the cooling system, forcing him to abandon the aircraft. After bailing out, he slammed against the tail, breaking both of his legs. His bad luck continued when his parachute got entangled in a tree. After being taken down, Fairrington was almost beaten up or even lynched by a number of townspeople, only being saved by an older woman who told them that has to be treated well, as he's a POW now. After a while, he was "officially" taken prisoner by german troops and taken to the Allied Airmens hospital at Untermaßfeld. What happened to him afterwards is pretty much unknown - but he survived the war.
