Character notes: Born in Sayre, Pennsylvania, in 1921, Russell grew up with an appreciation of aviation, given to him by his father, who was an airplane mechanic in the 20s and 30s. When Russell was ten, his father died in a work-related accident. He was then tasked with assuming responsibility for the household, and taking care of his mother and five sisters. Because his dad used to call him Kenny, he prefers to leave that name reserved for his immediate family and commonly goes by Russ.

Throughout his life, he’s had an interest in airplanes and cars, and an avid passion for playing baseball. If it weren’t for the war, Russell might have pursued a career in spots. When the war began, Russell signed up before the draft so he could choose his branch: the United States Army Air Force. He’d never flown before, but how bad could it be…right?

Russ fell in love with the freedom of flying and is looking forward to using his talents to push the United States closer to victory. After a few months of basic training, primary flight training and his first solo, Russell has arrived at Darrow AFB to embark on his second phase of training: basic flight training. Here, he will learn how to navigate and fly in formations with more complex aircraft. Here at Darrow Army Airfield, Russell is being trained by not only male pilots, but also female WASP pilots, one that he’s taken a secret liking to…Pamela Jost… as long as nobody finds out. Shh!

On his free days, Russell was invited by some of the WASPs to visit the local ranch, Diamond Spur Ranch. Falling in love with the people and animals, Russell has decided to donate some of his time as a ranch hand. He’s not great with horses, as he finds them intimidating, but he’s trying his best.

Though he is quiet by nature, Russ can’t wait to meet fellow cadets and ask why they’re interested in aviation. He will spend the next nine weeks at Darrow AAF, before moving on to his next training airfield. That is, if their instructor, Cpt. Rudy Fischer doesn’t kick them out for not having peak scores and flying maneuvers…
