Description

An entry for the Spec Evo community challenge/contest of Hyrotrioskjan/Joschua Knüppe 's #AtlantisBestiary3 project !

My 20th one !

For this entry, I choose to made another native species that descend from the surviving species from Phase 2.

This time, a species of crabs who descend from the Miocene Monk headed plover crab (see « Atlantis Phase 2 » Post, 1st April 2023, second box picture from the top of the chart. Link : www.deviantart.com/hyrotrioskj… ).

For this creation, I made it just because I was inspired another animal from another cultural media.

This creature in question, the primary source of inspiration for this entry, is the General Crab and the Pale Red Crab from the famous highly popular video-game Genshin Impact, by Hoyoverse (or MiHoHyo).

These two species are ones of the several NPC crabs that can be found and hunted/captured by the player in-game, in the Inazuma region archipelago.
The region in which we meet for the first time the highly popular character of Raiden Shogun.

Hence the species name is choose for them : Raidenis shogunis

I also put as possible the pattern of the two species on the species, while making it as realistically possible and realistic in terme of physical appearance and bodyshape.

I decide to put them as simple sexual dimorphism morphs of a single species instead of making the two apart close species, unlike in the original game.

The final result end up pretty well, at my opinion, for such a crab species to have such colors.

It was a fun tribute from mine to this characters and species I like a lot personnaly.

The results are the following species :

 * The Atlantis colonial crabs (Raidenis shogunis) ;

This species of crab, who roamed the beaches and rock gardens areas of Atlantis, display an unusual social structure that isn't really seen in others crabs.
It form large congregations of specimens who form true colonies in a sort of hive base, always made in a safe areas (in a crevasse, burrow, between rocks, roots, tangle of branches etc...), and their social structure display many similarities with the ones of ants/termites.

Althought there no queen as in the latters, mature females remain most of the time inside the hive and lay and rised their eggs/offsprings, while males, acting as soldiers and guardians, protect them and the hive by constantly surrounding thems, forming a protective living fence. Unlike most, see all, crabs, crustacean and arthropods, this species display a clear visible sexual dimophism.

Youngs females act as workers and their jobs is to find and rapatriate food into the hive, and are always accompanied by a escort of males of all ages during each excusion outside the hive.

While mature females remain all their lives in the hive, clean the hive, and reproduce often, since loss in young females is high. Females reproduce with several males, the strongest, to ensure a good genetic diversity.

Their somewhat matriarcal social structure is completely unique.

Outside that, they act as typical crabs, eating everything they can find, support both freshwater and saltwater waters, being found even in the center waters of Atlantis.
They are more robust than their Miocene ancestor, with shorter legs, and as such don't move with the same upright posture.
