Because Hiccup first thought he was toothless, because Toothless can bring his teeth into his head and when he does he looks like he doesn't have any teeth.

I'm going to see it this weekend with my friend. (thanks for the link though. XD)

I spent so much time looking for pictures of him that were right, an hour at least. Firefox wanted to crash on me for having so many tabs open. I really try my hardest to get characters as close to what they should look like as possible.
