There is a lot of playful androgyny in this shot. Androgynous people have always scared the hell out of most people in Western culture and were condemned for it....I'm sure that you know all of this crap, but this is the kind of thing that makes me smile!
Remember now, I'm an old hippie, there was a folk singer in my day named Donovan (who is still touring, I believe) who came out with a light and humourous song, "Rules and Regulations;" a couple of lines went:
"Is it a boy or is it a girl?
Takes all kinds to make up the world."
I hate to put this disclaimer in, but yes, I know you're a woman - it's very obvious!

A Journey in to Androgeny.
My first reaction was that this was all wrong which is, as it turns out, brilliant! That is just the right reaction for this piece.
It was the hat! I couldn't understand it. And so I was hooked. Gotta look! Got to try and find the answer. This is a very intriguing image. I know you are a woman (and how!) nevertheless, in this it's just possible you could be male! You aren't of course and one always comes to that conclusion, but the suggestion conveyed by this image is compelling.
It is fascinating for the same reason that Annie Lennox is fascinating. She is clearly all woman but somehow there is something seductively male about her. However, I feel you demonstrate surprizing flexibility with this image, because unlike Annie Lennox, you are not fundamentally androgenous in appearance, in my opinion. Yet, you achieve it, and I think it may be as a result of deliberately using the wrong hat! It's clearly a female accessory but given a Frank Sinatra tilt, and touched in a way reminiscent of a man greeting a woman. Somehow, the hat is just "wrong", I feel, but in a way that makes the picture work. A contradiction, and contradiction is the theme that runs through this image.
Then, there's the sparkling eye make-up, reminiscent of drag queens, but not overly done in the same way. The more I look the more I find this totally engrossing. The tantelising glimpse of bra, the large draping necklace, the masses of firey hair and that look! It just makes one ask question after question. Subtle lipstick and deceptive, almost tight lips just add to the fascination. What are those lips asking, saying?
The mirror suggests "another side" an alternative, and what looks like a male suit jacket seems to reinforce this idea of duality. It is worn but doesn't appear to fit and in so doing exposes femininity. All aspects of this image work together to suggest subtle contardictions that keep one looking on and on.
I just love it.
