I think its a great shot how it is. I like how the horse seems to have all this expanse to him/her-self. The lines of the hills are beautifully dramatic and there isn't too much sky. How much of the land in this photo is yours?

Back to where you can see the slashing around the fence line. We don't run that much land anymore, just about 200 acres. Folks are getting older and we're basically in hobby-farm territory nowdays. Thanks for the good word.

While I've got your attention, I wanted to mention that I really like the photo you submitted for suzi9mm's contest. I didn't bother commenting on the actual photo since I figured it probably already had a hundred or so comments there saying "wow, you're fukkin' awesome!", but I really like it. Mostly because I was linked to it having no idea what it was and just was just struck by how Australian is was. Techinically it's good, it's very attractive, D.O.F., natural light, whatever, but mostly, there is just something so Australian about it. I love it. I don't know how you did it, but it's great. Top stuff, mate.

Ahh, ok. So do your parents just run horses on it?

I really appreciate your comment. As a city guy, it was hard to appreciate what people were going through until I spent a weekend down on a mates' uncles' farm. We are only reminded of the hardships faced by many farmers in the occational news story. And somehow sports results are supposed to be more important. Unfortunately, thats all too Australian as well.

Thank goodness I've been saved from the ravages of useless commentors. 95% of the comments are insightful, like yours. But I feel sorry for the other entrants who have probably taken the brunt of most of the one liners.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, I was back home on a 28.8kbs connection and waiting for dA to load was all too much for me.

Nah, we run sheep. About 1000 or so, super & ultra fine wool merinos. We're out here more for the lifestyle than anything else. There's obviously no money in farming, so we've never really run massive numbers because it's a fuckload of work for something you can't make a living out of. So, as it stands, the farm is a beautiful place to live, a nice life to lead and massive tax deduction. At least loosing money is useful for something, eh? Slowly the properties around us are being subdivided and sold to yuppies, or alternative folk who want to run a few cows and not look after the land at all. That's the problem with Australia being unwilling to subsidise farmers beyond deducting the tax on their tractors, if you want to farm, you can't afford to live. It won't be long before most of the land around us is errosion, black berries and white bloody picket fences. The saddest thing is, these guys are living right next door to farmers, they've bought their land from a farmer who's family would've been running it for decades, probably since they cleared it themselves, and even they appear to have no idea of how hard it is to make ends meet.

Perhaps if farmers were the kind of minority group who stood up and demanded compensation there would be further finanical support, but it would appear that unless you berate people into seeing that you personally benefit them, you don't see shit in the form of recognition from the government, the press, and people. All around, it's a shame that while other countries see bit to provide significant subsidisation for farmers, farming for a living in Australia could bearly be considered a reality.

Thanks for that insight. I know what you mean about Aussie farmers going up against others who are heavily subsidised (didn't the US spend $300 billion over a few years? And the EU are almost as bad). But as you said, the government can hardly control our own citizens from trying find their own bit of space to flee to, let alone negotiate fairer international competition. As some probably famous person once said "We live in interesting times"... it will be interesting to see where we end up in a few years time. Unfortunately a lot of people will get hurt along the way.

The very large DOF and composition are absolutely fantastic. It's a great scenery shot, with an object in the foreground making it even more complete.

Well done... very well done!

thankyou!

May I ask what DOF stands for? I remember having read about in the past, but I'm just sooooo forgetful...

DOF means Depth Of Field. It's the amount of the photo that is in focus depite the distance.

great capture, the focus and lighting seem a little off. i for one like the shot up close, really puts the focus on the horse. beautiful stance the horse has got and the rolling hills don't hurt a damn bit, keep it up...

To be honest I've never really liked the lighting in this photo at all. I had attempted to change the brightness and contrast to at least make the colours a little better, but it with so much depth in the photo it's hard to find something that works.

I've never been very confident with bording, so I've tended to just avoid it completely.

What would you suggest for a photo like this?

Nice shot Terri I agree with *wymhdv about more sky etc in the image, it would make this good picture great. Kudos for a good shot

Love and peace,
Steve.

There actually was more around the horse, not more sky, but more to the left and the bottom, but I cropped it out :s

Silly, silly girl I am.

Great picture. I think it would maybe have been a little better taken further back with more sky and landscape around the horse. It's still good though.
