I actually like how this turned out more than I thought I was going to. Half way through drawing it, I was kind of reconsidering even wanting to draw this and upload it. Partially because it was turning out super drab looking, also because I'm not sure it's too self-explanatory. But the idea itself is something I've had in my head for a while.I kind always wanted to show Handwing being so desperate to still have Beijeye as his friend, that he tries some way of contacting him that obviously doesn't work, specifically something that he normally wouldn't believe in in the first place. Even more so, I liked the idea of him trying this, and Vilkas walking in on it and Handwing having to explain what the fuck he's doing with something as cheesy as a ouija board. With a knife stabbed in it.
When Vilkas lived with Beijeye as a kid, he was, by default, also living with Handwing. Beijeye was like his older brother, he did end up being like a kid brother to Handwing as well, except that Handwing is like the asshole, bad influence, sibling who picks on the younger one. He cares about Vilkas and knows that Vilkas is literally the only person he has left who even tolerates him and his bullshit, but he goes out of his way to not let anyone realize it. After Beijeye was killed, Vilkas wasn't able to depend on Handwing as much as he really needed, but as Vilkas got older, Handwing has turned to leaching off him more and more. As traumatic as Beijeye's death was to Vilkas, and as much as Handwing over-uses it as an excuse, Handwing has had a harder time moving on. Which is why Vilkas can't bring himself to just ditch Handwing, despite just about everyone he knows telling him to.
So, basically, Vilkas may think this is strange and Handwing may be all defensively jerk-y about it; but really, Vilkas just feels bad for him.

I used to try to use references, but it just never worked for me. I still sometimes will try to find and use a reference when I just can't think of how something should look, but I pretty much always end up looking through pages of images that are "not quite right", it might sometimes help me get the idea more clear in my head, but I never end up using a direct reference. I work very backwards. I generally don't even start with a solid idea; I don't really "see" things in my head. I kind of just add things in as I go, I'll draw one object, it'll make me think of an other object or a place I've been, and that'll give me a clearer idea how I want the setting to be and feel.
Like in this specific drawing, I had just the vague idea that I know they live in some type of run old abandoned place at least partially under ground. Up until I drew this, I was leaning towards it being an old bomb shelter left over from the 50's/60', but as I was drawing it as that, the aesthetic was just wrong. I started leaning just towards a normal basement or cellar. I added in that cooler, because I know they have a fridge of some sort. I added the wall paper because I wanted to keep it very dated, old, and obviously not originally theirs. Eventually I got to the point where I've decided that it's the basement of an old house built in the 40'-60's but the rest of the house is destroyed, all that remains is the basement.
Augh, that is a very long explanation... I'm not good at explaining things simply XD

oh wow thank you this is actually super helpful!! I like the idea of just letting myself draw and adding stuff/changing stuff as i go! I'm super into the post-apocalyptic or abandoned looking scenery (writing my own comic/story in this type of universe haha)

Honestly, that wall paper is actually what saved this from just getting scrapped half way through. Before I added that in, it was just so drab and nothing but grey and brown, and I was starting to hate it. So, I'm really glad hear that. :3
